Members of the SouthernPigskin.com Staff release their 2010 RealTree All-South Prep football team consisting of players from the Southern Pigskin coverage area.
The South arguably produces the best high school football talent in the country. This year offers no exception as states like Florida, Georgia and Virginia are continuing to produce many of the premier athletes college football programs are pursuing. With literally thousands of high school players to choose from, picking the best of the best has been an extremely difficult challenge. The 2010 SouthernPigskin.com RealTree All-South Prep Team is led by current Alabama verbal commitment Phillip Sims. An extraordinary talent, Sims passed for 10,725 yards and 119 touchdown passes in his career. Those numbers are the best in Virginia High School history. Sims put up incredible numbers but you need not look any further than this amazing stat; as a starter he was 48-4, which included a 28-game winning streak. He also was 39-1 during the regular season.http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2009/1031/recruit_e_sims_sy_200.jpg
Joining Sims on offense is current Florida commit Mack Brown. An explosive running back, Brown runs with passion and will likely make a big impact in Gainesville next fall as a true freshmen. Most of the players named will get long looks in fall camp and will likely see playing time as true freshmen. Chris Dunkley, Ivan McCartney and Da’Rick Rogers are three of the best receivers in the country.
Defensively it doesn’t get much better than FSU verbal commitment Jeff Luc. He is regarded as one of the premier linebacker prospects nationally and if there is one better we haven’t seen him. A strong and physical athlete, Luc can change direction like a defensive back. Joining Luc is William T. Dwyer High School’s Matt Elam. Fresh off of his Florida state championship game, Elam could very well be the best defensive player in the nation.
The team features four junior underclassmen. Valdosta (GA) High’s Jay Rome is a big, strong and athletic tight end. Rome can take over a game and his upside is frankly scary. Like Rome, Harrisonburg (VA) High School’s Landon Turner could also be the top player at his position entering next fall. Turner is big, aggressive, plays with leverage and finishes the play perhaps better than any high school player in recent memory. Turner is on another level now and looks college ready as a junior. Not to be overshadowed, defensive end Jadeveon Clowney from South Pointe (SC) High in Rockhill cannot be blocked. Clowney is elite and next year could be positioned to be the top prospect in the country. Peach State defensive tackle Tim Jernigan looks the part and on film he blows up offensives. Jernigan and Turner are truly dominant young linemen.
The University of Florida leads with five verbal commitments; Georgia has four. Meanwhile the state of Florida is the home of 14 out of 29 team members.
