SouthernPigskin.com SoCon Columnist Josh Buchanan makes his week six predictions after going 34-2 through the first five weeks.
Season Record: 34-2
Samford at Western Carolina
Nobody in America would have predicted that Samford would have the SoCon’s top rusher at this point in sophomore RB Chris Evans (103.2ypg), but Evans has risen to star status already. The Bulldogs are coming off a very scrappy performance against Elon while Western Carolina was handled fairly easily by The Citadel. Neither team has been stellar offensively. Samford doesn’t have much left in the tank after last week while Western is anxious for a SoCon victory.
Western Carolina - 21
Samford - 20
Furman at Elon
Furman boasts the league’s top scoring defense (18.0) and total defense (298.2) numbers while Elon has the top pass offense (294.8). The Phoenix also boast the SoCon’s #1 receiver and passer in the league. Something has to give this weekend. While the Paladins have been impressive early on this season and Elon has been shaky, I am going with the home team to walk away with the victory.
Elon - 24
Furman - 20
The Citadel at Appalachian State
The top two scoring offenses in the SoCon (ASU #1, Citadel #2) clash this weekend in Boone. ASU also brings the top total offense in the SoCon to this game. The Mountaineers will look to slow down the tandem of QB Bart Blanchard and WR Andre Roberts for the Bulldogs. This game should be fairly high scoring as neither team has been great defensively while both have been among the best in FCS at scoring. ASU wins this one in a shootout.
Appalachian State State - 35
The Citadel - 31
Georgia Southern at Chattanooga
The Eagles are coming off a disappointing loss to Wofford last week while the Mocs were manhandled by Furman. Neither team has been impressive in both scoring offense and defense. Expect GSU to prevail in this one behind the arm of Antonio Henton.
Georgia Southern - 30
Chattanooga - 14
BYE WEEK: Wofford
NEXT WEEK: Mid-Season Awards
