SouthernPigskin.com SoCon Columnist Josh Buchanan makes his week seven predictions after going 41-3 through the first seven weeks.
Season Record: 41-3
Western Carolina at Wofford
The Catamounts showed a pulse against Furman in a close loss and could finally break their 18-game SoCon losing streak this year. Wofford, the top offense in the SoCon, was dominant on the ground against UTC last week and is looking like the top contender to dethrone Appalachian State as the SoCon champion. Despite the improvements last week, Wofford should handle WCU by double digits.
Wofford - 35
Western Carolina - 17
The Citadel at Furman
This could be the closest SoCon battle of the weekend. Both teams are similar statistically with The Citadel boasting a slightly better offense while Furman has the edge on defense. The Paladins have home field advantage but the Bulldogs’ backs are against the wall with playoff elimination likely if they lose. Furman wins in a close one behind the arm of QB Justin Sorrells.
Furman - 31
The Citadel - 27
Elon at Chattanooga
After a bad start to the season and a shellacking at the hands of Wofford last week, there is talk that Rodney Allison could be relieved of his duties at any point in Chattanooga. Elon almost lost to The Citadel last weekend but showed why many believe they are a SoCon contender. This could be a trap game playing the Mocs on the road after an emotional victory last weekend. The score could be tighter than expected.
Elon - 35
Chattanooga - 23
Appalachian State at Georgia Southern
GSU enters the game unranked while Appalachian is one loss away from being on the playoff bubble. This should be a high scoring affair with App State having the #1 scoring offense and GSU having the #3 scoring offense in the SoCon. With the way many games have gone this year it would also not be a shock to see both defenses finally wakeup, though past performances seem to make that unlikely. This true rivalry should be a good one and closer than the rankings might indicate.
Appalachian State - 35
Georgia Southern - 27
