The league went 7-2 in non-conference games this week.

The ACC picked up yet another win over an SEC team for the second straight week. The league went 7-2 in non-conference games this week.

Main Event

Miami 21, Florida 16 — The Hurricanes won the final meeting of their rivalry with the Gators and gave third-year coach Al Golden a signature win over a ranked opponent and an SEC team. The win also goes a long way in the recruiting battle in South Florida. There's no bigger recruiting pitch than beating an in-state foe on the field.

It was Miami's first win over a top 10 team since 2010, when the Canes beat eighth-ranked Oklahoma.

The Miami defense, considered the team's Achilles heel, was instrumental in the win. Of Florida's six red zone possessions, it only scored twice.

Bottom line — It was an ugly win, but Miami got the last laugh. The offense struggled greatly after scoring twice in the first quarter and Stephen Morris doesn't seem to be on the same page with his receivers. UM has a much needed bye week and plays Savannah State and South Florida before opening the conference slate in October.

Near Miss

NC State 23, Richmond — The Wolfpack needed a 48-yard field goal with 33 seconds left in the game to avoid an upset. NC State trailed for much of the game, including 21-13 at halftime, but outscored the Spiders 10-0 in the second half.

Other games:

Boston College 24, Wake Forest 10

Oregon 59, Virginia 10

Clemson 52, South Carolina State 13

North Carolina 40, Middle Tennessee 20

Virginia Tech 45, Western Carolina 3

Maryland 47, Old Dominion 10

Duke 28, Memphis 14

Northwestern 48, Syracuse 27

MVPs

1. Miami linebacker Denzel Perryman had a game-best 13 tackles in the Hurricanes' 21-16 win over rival Florida. The Hurricanes defense was on the field for 38 minutes.

2. Boston College running back Andre Williams rushed a career-high 202 yards and a touchdown in the Eagles' 24-10 win against Wake Forest Friday night.
