So it’s been awhile. Are you starting to understand why Democrats were pouring attention on this virus and why the president failed in escalating it’s importance early? The US has over 1/4 the global cases and is working towards 1/4 global deaths too. Is this what you call leadership and preparedness?
I haven’t been spending much time on here because 24/7 virus has become tiresome, and there’s a lack of sports right now.
Our response certainly hasn’t been perfect, and it’s fair to try and learn
from things, but the idea that its importance wasn’t escalated early is a political narrative and not really accurate. I would certainly say things could be improved and that Trump is overly optimistic, but it was taken seriously. See below:
Jan. 13th: the first known case outside of China was reported in Thailand
January 17th: The CDC started entry screenings at major airports - before any confirmed cases in the US
Jan. 21, the first confirmed case in the US
Jan 29th: 8 days after the first known case in the US, passengers from China were screened in Alaska and under observation for 3 days when they ultimately arrived in Ca.
Jan 30. The first person-to-person transmission in the US, and the CDC says the risk is still low
Jan 31st, the day after the first person-to person transmission in the US and with 0 deaths in the US, Trump declared a public health emergency (sounds to me like he thought it was important) and begins quarantining people that had been to parts of China. (Do you remember that happening in your lifetime? Sounds like it’s being taken seriously to me.)
Jan 31st. _ Again, the day after the 1st person-to-person transmission in the US, travel ban for foreign nationals who had been in China is announced and flights from China directed to select airports.
Biden responded with: We are in the midst of a crisis with the coronavirus. We need to lead the way with science — not Donald Trump’s record of hysteria, xenophobia, and fear-mongering. He is the worst possible person to lead our country through a global health emergency.
Nancy Pelosi introduced legislation to limit the President’s powers to take such action.
The Biden campaign now says: “Joe Biden supports travel bans that are guided by medical experts, advocated by public health officials, and backed by a full strategy,” Kate Bedingfeld, Biden’s deputy campaign manager, told CNN. “Science supported this ban, therefore he did too.”
Headlines read:
NYT: “Beware the Pandemic Panic” - Jan 29
Washington Post: “Get a grippe, America. The flu is a much bigger threat than Conronavirus for now.” Wa Po Jan. 31
Vox: “Is this going to be a deadly pandemic? No” - Vox Feb. 1
Vox: “For most people, you’re probably more likely to be catching flu than you are to be getting Coronavirus.” Vox Feb 2
“Is the new virus more ‘deadly’ than flu? Not exactly” - AP Feb 18
He has also leveraged private industry to help get supplies made. Again, I don’t remember that happening this way any time recently. The left bashed Mike Lindell even though he converted 75% of his production capacity to make 50,000 masks per day.
This is a small list of steps taken by the federal government to combat this. There have certainly been flaws in the response with poor tests etc created by the CDC. I would never suggest the response has been perfect and that things can’t be improved - that’s the nature of something like this. It’s a very contagious virus and obviously hard to stop. Trump has absolutely been overly optimistic in his statements. When you look at what was actually done, it’s simply not true to say it wasn’t taken seriously or that a response was delayed, as the timeline clearly shows.
Before it comes up here, he clearly did not refer to the virus as a hoax. He talked about the complaints about his response being a hoax. His reference to a hoax occurred on Feb 28th. That was about a month after declaring a public emergency, quarantining people and restricting travel. That would pretty clearly suggest that he didn’t see the virus itself as a hoax.
Anyway, I’ll certainly read any response you write, but I’m probably not going to spend a lot of time going back and forth on this because, as I said, the constant talk on one topic in every aspect of life has become tiresome. I never thought the draft would be such a highlight. I hope all is well, and you’re staying healthy.
