Kirk Herbstreit Calls Out Programs That Are Using COVID as Excuses to not play

I was watching the CFP Top 25 show and I was a little surprised to see Hertreit call out programs that are avoiding getting humiliated by using Covid as a cover.

He was suggesting that Michigan could screw Ohio State by not playing them and keeping them out of the Big 10 Title game and probably out of the playoffs because they wouldn’t meet the minimum qualifier.  He had to clarify that and say he didn’t think Michigan would do it on purpose…but he sort of did.  His comments were also throwing shade at FSU.  Here’s what he said:

We live in such a strange world,” he said. “I talk to a lot of coaches around the country who really feel teams are opting out because they don’t want to be humiliated. It’s happening.”

Salsa Boy’s going to take a little heat on this but he’s right.

That would give Harbaugh some payback against OSU on his way out.
It is strange that such a thing is even a consideration, but it’s a strange season.

Joe Klatt, who I usually don’t care for is confirming Herbie’s comments in a tweet:

2)

3) Disrespect for
@BYUfootball

4) I hear same thing as

from coaches!

As you said..what a weird year

We know FSU is one of those being discussed. I haven’t paid that much attention to know who else they may mean.

I didn’t watch the show. I heard about his comments on radio today. Not to hijack the topic, but was anyone surprised surprised to see UNC go up two spots after losing to ND by 2 TD’s? I think the committee is setting up UNC vs. Miami for Orange Bowl if ND and Clemson make playoffs. I could be off, but it doesn’t really matter that far up the poll.

I was surprised to see them move up, but I don’t have a problem with it. It has always bugged me that a team ranked somewhere like 18 drops if they lose to number 2. If the rankings are right, they should lose. I’ve never thought that should mean they have to fall. By extension, if they play a highly ranked team closely, I don’t have a problem with them moving to a higher ranking.

Personally I would shy away from those types of comments if I were Klatt or Herbie but good for them.  I also think it would be funny if Michigan did that.  I still contend it was a bad idea for Mike Norvell to piss off Dabo his first year in the league.  He probably could have called it the day before and not caught too much heat but I don’t think I’ve seen Dabo get this pissed about a coach before (Maybe Doren after computergate).

If I were tOSU I would be kinda nervous.  Hell as a Clemson fan I’m kinda nervous about getting in the playoff and we’re on better ground than tOSU.

You are probably right but it needed to be said by someone in the sports media that’s not a shock-jock or provocateur trying to get ratings or “likes” on a twitter account.  It’s a career risk to go there but this is the type of year where you can make such a comment this late in the season.  Teams that had lofty expectations like a Michigan, LSU, FSU just to name a few don’t want to be humiliated on the field and Covid is the perfect excuse.  Dabo really stuck his neck out there calling FSU out and took heat from it but now it looks like he was correct as he is getting support.

OSU does have reason to be nervous. I’m sure the Big 10 has a plan in place to have someone play OSU if that happens because they don’t want them to miss the playoff.

I have a big problem with Ohio State being ranked as high as they are.  They’ve only played about half the games of the other top teams and the combined record of those opponents they’ve competed against is 9-13.  The one signature win they have is against Indiana and they didn’t look good.  BYU has played was just as weak of a schedule but double the games and is getting crapped on by the Committee.  There are at least 4 schools that should be ahead of Ohio State.  It would be easier to overlook the schedule if they played 7 or 8 games.  tOSU is getting a disproportionate advantage in the COVID year.

Yeah, four games is ridiculous. It doesn’t provide enough of a body of work and keeps everyone fresh and healthy.

Liberty had to cancel their game against Coastal Carolina so BYU snuck in there.  I think it’s the Gameday game this weekend too.  Props to both teams for making something work.  It would be hilarious if BYU kept tOSU out the playoff.

I love that they made this game happen. I would like to see Coastal win, but would really love to see BYU force themselves into the playoff discussion.

That Coastal v BYU game was great! Good for both of them for making it happen and for putting on a great show.
