I never thought I would change my opinion on wanting to expand the playoffs but the recent changes to transfers and players sitting out of bowls to get ready for the NFL makes me think it’s time to end the bowls,

My initial thought is to have a 16 team playoff for the National Title and a 16 team “NIT-Like” playoff for the next 16 teams.

The Bowls are just exhibition games now that don’t have the same significance.  Even the major bowls are a let down for teams if they aren’t part of the playoffs.

Instead of giving them trips and a swag bag of goodies, pay them a cut of the playoff money.  You may see kids getting out of the whirlpools in the training rooms and decide to start playing in the post season if there was more to gain.

just a thought.

Yes.  If you aren’t in the top 4 towards the end of the year, or even if you take a loss and aren’t one of the big names you have no real shot.  Open it up some to let people at least feel like its possible.  At least 5 conference champions and 3 at large bids.

Totally agree. I would take it one step further and only allow power 5 teams into the playoffs. Face it MAC, SoCon, etc teams are not getting in anyway.

And Notre Dame would have to become a real member of the ACC.

I also like the ACC format of conference only schedule plus one. And the plus one would have to be a P5 school.

Say what you will about the Non CPF major bowls, but IF UNC is somehow able to make the Orange Bowl vs. aTm or UF I’d be over the moon excited. It would be greater in a non Covid year, but all bowls are like that. As far as expanding the playoffs… If it did I would prefer only 6 teams, with no guarantee of all Power 5’s being represented. If the Power 5 conferences want something like that just make it include on Power 5 teams. G5 schools can have their own playoff. None of this involves the NCAA so they can both call themselves champions at the end.

I think 4 works and 8 could work but not more.  Too many games at 16.  I think the P5 should support lower levels of the sport financially but cut them out the schedule.

IMO the biggest problem most people have with the current playoff is it came at the same time of some pretty consistent dominance by Clemson and Bama and they are tired of seeing the same 2 team win most of the time.  Expanding the playoff doesn’t “fix” that and it’s also not “broken” because of that.

This year it’s arguable that Clemson and Bama should be the only ones playing for a NCG.  They are not guarantee to both make it but they’ve shown a lot more to earn the honor at this point.
