I may be naive, but I have a lot more faith in the nation’s ability to endure. Republicans thought the Obama years were going to be the end of times and the US was fine. You can go back and hear the same doom and gloom comments when the opposition is in charge.
As for California, you thoughts of seceding is an intriguing “what if” discussion. Just from within, there would be so much civil unrest from those people that are against secession it would be scary. Then you would see an Exodus of Californians that want to remain American citizens would not stay in a place that left the Union. I would guess 30%-40% would leave if they didn’t kill each other..Then there is the cut of of Federal funds..Of course that works both ways with the loss of tax revenue. What about the Military? Does the US shut down all bases and tell California they are on their own? There are so many really bad scenarios from secession we could discuss.
I think if it ever got that close the Federal Government would do almost anything to avoid that.

The Movie “The Truman Show” was more prophetic than what I’m reading in this book.
From what I’m reading in the outline of this book it seems like the protagonist is pushing a very strong central government under the guise of a Nationalist cloak.
