I’m not sure what to think here:

http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/25659219/houston-cougars-finalizing-deal-dana-holgorsen-west-virginia-mountaineers

Going from the Big 12 to the AAC seems like a laterally move at best and maybe a step down, but perhaps DH saw this as his best opportunity give whatever the state of affairs are at WVU.

Houston has been trying the ramp up their football program and they want in the Big 12.

The money sure looks good and he gets back to Texas.  I think Houston wins on this one.

The question is what happens to WVU?  Who can they sign this late?  It will be interesting to see who the Mountaineers land

I think he was feeling stuck at WVU, he reached a ceiling it seemed.  No real progression after years of having talent and hype to do so.

Feels a lot like the spurrier situation of abandoning ship.  Still a weird lateral at best move.  Positioning himself for a future p5 Texas job?

WVu is on an island with the Big 12.  The only reason they joined is because they couldn’t get into geographically closer conferences like the ACC or SEC and even the Big 10.  It was the best option available when conference alignment was going on.

Any coach will have obstacles with travel and recruiting at WVU and it doesn’t look like the Big 12 has any interest in expanding anywhere on the East like a Cincy or UCF to give WVU some close teams.

I think the grant of rights expires for WVU in the Big 12 in 2025.  I wonder if they we stick around with that league are try again with the ACC, SEC or Big 10?

Also, I wonder if Dana feels there is a chance Houston could get into the Big 12?  Houston had been trying to get the Big 12 to invite them.  Who knows?

According to my WV fan here at work, he wanted an extension, WV didn’t want to or buyout the contract that started Jan 1st, so he took off. Kind of strange, but I think he knew with Grier leaving, he had zilch for talent at QB. He had their best team in a long time and crapped in the bed with those losses at the end of the season.

WVU to hire Troy’s Neal Brown.  Good hire.

Never been but have heard one needs 10 showers per day if living in Houston, Tx.

Supposedly rivals LA in air pollution.

It’s a giant city, with sub tropical weather, and a talent base every bit as good as Miami. He has a lot of ties there and the school has a mega booster that wants to get them in the Big 12.

I too think he got out in front of the Posse at WVU.
