Pretty sure it was already going to happen, but that was embarrassing today. Clemson basketball is embarrassing. It’s almost a sure thing that Brownell’s time is ticking, he basically has the head in the noose. Who do we get next? Who COULD we get next, would anyone really want to come coach this program?
National Champion football program, likely soon to be CWS baseball program, damn good soccer program, basketball is the step child and is a really tough gig up against the other big sports.
Brownell’s 7th year and we still play like this. Time for a change. I’m not the biggest basketball fan, to be honest with the level of football we are playing and the level of baseball we are capable of playing I’d be happy just to make noise in the ACC here and there in basketball post season would just be extra icing. All we need to be is decent, all you need to be at Clemson in basketball is decent. Maybe that’s the mindset that is keeping us down but it is what I’m guessing most Clemson fans feel like. We need a Dabo of basketball to change the culture I guess.
I thought the same thing when I first saw the score. I’m not a big basketball fan but that score is embarrassing. Honestly I would talk to that top recruit and see if he would prefer a new coach. Sounds dumb but one guy can make that big of a difference in basketball. Maybe even hire his HS coach to save some change.
I don’t know why it’s so hard to get a good coach. IMO basketball is far less complicated than football. We should never be paying BB more than $1M. I would rather cycle through HS coaches until we found a good one starting them at $250/year. None of them would turn down that offer. Upping his contract for basically a complete lack of success was idiotic, he wasn’t getting offers to go somewhere else.
College basketball has changed so much that I don’t watch the sport. With the “one and done” players able to enter the NBA a place like Clemson will always struggle to be competitive in basketball. College used to develop players where by the time they entered the NBA they were more mature and had improved on their fundamentals…now an NBA players first 2-3 years are now spent learning things that would have been developed with 3-4 years of college. You will never see another era when you have a team like Jordan, Perkins and Worthy on the court at the same time. Those guys would have all been in the NBA instead of dominating college Basketball.
Unless the NBA comes up with something that keeps colleges players on campus longer, Clemson will have to get a big dollar ringer that can get the “one and done” players and I don’t think the will spend the money as long as football is the main focus…and rightfully so.
I never expect that. I do however expect us to be competitive in conference play. You really don’t have to do much to keep Clemson fans happy with basketball, but you do have to be competitive. Brownell is not doing that.
I know a lot of people had mixed feelings about Oliver Purnell, but he had a “gimmick” style much like Paul Johnson’s offense that worked well at Clemson. We are never going to get the talent to be a major player, but OP’s method allowed for average talented players to hang in a game and steal some big victories that kept us a 20 plus win program. I was fine with OP…..
Pines. To better explain my comment. I don’t mind paying more than a million for a BB coach. I don’t mind paying more than 2M. But not for a coach that gets his ass handed to him in conference every single year. I hate paying that much even more so when he’s obviously not getting offers to go elsewhere. Do you and I get 10% raises every year? NO because that’s unsustainable even if we’re doing GREAT work.
I really haven’t watched us play but the proof is likely in the pudding, we’re not getting any better. IMO if he gets that top recruit keep him because recruits build programs. If he doesn’t there’s not much need to keep him around.
I would rather go low budget looking for the Chad Morris of BB than try to steal a coach that is already expensive. At a glance the only successful budget coach I saw was Wisconsins Greg Gard that makes $600K with a $400K bonus. I know he stepped into a completely different situation than Brad but his record is .200 better than Brads at nearly half the price. I doubt we would ever get him but the worst that happens is we make Wisconsin fork up a few million extra to keep him.
Clemson fans expect to be the UNC football of the basketball world. Get lucky on a few good players and a decent coach and we have a shot at the conference title. We expect to have a .4% chance at a basketball National title, nearly a mistake.
To be fair UNC’s shot at a football natty is higher than Clemson’s at a basketball natty. UNC has several ACC football titles and Clemson only has 2 runner up basketball.
And no I pour a lot of time into football, fishing, and hunting so basketball prime time is used to help me catch up on other life items. Not that I completely ignore sports Feb-July but I spend much less time on them. I have done well in the office sweet 16 bracket though. Got Duke 2 years ago drawing teams from a hat and Cuse last year after drawing the 9th draft position.
Amazing to see Clemson still listed on the bubble…yall have lost a lot of close ones this year but it seems that Brownell may lose his job. If he does, who do you all think will make things better? Waiting to see who is the hot coach in the tourney?

Great question… If you think Brownell is going to continue with sub 20 win teams for the next several years then I say go for someone else. Frankly, we seem to be a good enough program to plug an play just about anyone that can accomplish this.
I don’t know if Clemson can snag a “ringer” unless they are willing to pay a disproportionate amount of money. We are to Basketball what South Carolina is to Football.
You would think with out location, facilities and fan base we could field a consistently more competitive team, but the one-and-done’s go to the bigger programs which is what those places are geared towards.
Will Wade at VCU is mentioned a lot for NCSU but I think he is a Clemson grad. He would be a good hire. Of course if yall go on a run, Brownell may even get an extension…who knows.
It seems the best programs build a program around the 1-2 year players. Clemson is still behind the times when it comes to this. As bad as this sounds, you probably have to stop worrying about graduating players and be willing to go after those edgy players that aren’t going to graduate anyway…
Does Clemson and the fans want this? How bad do you want to be successful?
College Basketball is nothing more than a minor league for the NBA now. I done like the “One-and-done” situation which is why I stop following the sport on a regular basis a very long time ago. It just isn’t the same game anymore.
