if unc wins it all, all is well.  i dont’ think they will but all is well if they do.

Why not? They’ve got just as good if not a better chance than anyone left in the field. I don’t think LSU was the equivalent of an 8 seed. They were better. UNC bascially took the game from them when it mattered most. Down the stretch UNC played their game, hit their shots, and stopped LSU from scoring. That’s all anybody has to do to win the entire tournament. UNC has shown to have the guards to win. The big guys aren’t that bad, either.

2 things ...

i don’t believe ty will be 100% the whole way and it gets a lot harder.  hope i am wrong.

and

i don’t think unc plays anywhere close to elite defense.

1st, without a national championship in the last 20 yrs you can’t be in cat 1 or 2.  3rd category is really, really good but no rings, pushing to be in no. 2.  i am sure i will miss some team or 2.

historical elite (more than just 15-20 yrs of good, can take a yr or 3 of being down)
unc
kentucky
doook
ucla
kansas
indiana (even if down, they’ve earned this)

current and coming close to above
uconn (very close to moving up)
florida (if nothing in next 3-4 yrs they move down)
michigan st (almost, almost moved down)

currently as good as it gets
pitt
looeyville
gonzaga

not elite but needs to be more consistent or go to multiple final 4’s in a short span to be in above group (likely missing a lot of teams here)
arizona (3 yrs ago they were up 1)
wake
georgetown (was very close to being up but this year killed that)
maryland (moved down a couple yrs ago)
washignton
nova

feel free to criticize, haha, like you always do or add.

Arizona has been in the tournament for 25 years in a row.  They are among the historical elite.  They have not had any down seasons after Lute Olson left.  UNC and Indiana did much worse after Knight and Dean left.

they aren’t elite right now or last year when it was a GIFT for them to make the tourney at 19-14.  UNC’s down year wasn’t after Dean left, but after Woody left.

Arizona has 1 national championship, UNC has 4 and IU has 5.  Az basketball wasn’t anything before Lute, IU and UNC go multiple coaches and many decades.  They very easily could move up to category 2 but they got many, many years and at least 1 more NC to get to 1.

I am actually a Az fan and later my sister was a nurse in Tucson and to Lute’s first wife, but they aren’t in that first group, that’s rare air.

Duke is elite but Arizona is not?  Only 1 game separates a NC between Duke and Arizona, NC game in 2001.  If Arizona had won an Elite 8 in 2005 defeating Illinois at Chicago, they would have eventually played UNC for another NC.

i know doook is down by their standards the last few 10 final 4’s in a 19 yr run and 3 NC in the last 18 yrs trumps any other program in the nation and i can’t stand {insert bad word here.}  they also have a lot more history than the wildcats

zona has had a few too many first round flameouts.  i’d love for them to be there but that is going to depend on who the next coach they hire is.

Well under some your guidelines my boys WVU have made the tourney several times, have the logo, made Sweet 16 appearances, Elite 8 appearances…. have a Hall of Fame coach and play in the best league.

It’s like you just listed teams that have won it all. Maryland, Gonzaga, Washington, Mich State are not better hoops programs with better brands nationally than us. In my opinion. And Arizona’s coach was elite not their program. We beat them in the NCAA’s recently.

michigan st went to 3 final fours in a row and have a nc in the last decade
maryland went to 2 and has a ring.

solid argument with zaga and udub though zaga is by far more recognizable name right now.

can’t look at 1 year, have to look at a whole.  if that were the case dayton would be over wvu.

Dayton has not been to 3 Sweet 16’s in the past 5 years and an Elite 8….. In fact, I believe only 3 other schools have done that. I know not to many have. Our basketball program has a long history and most recently we’ve been incredible. I don’t think we are elite… and I don’t think the Zags or MD are either. Mich St. I guess you could argue but their league is so weak…. I’m not sure.

i didn’t say any of the above were elite, only the first 2 groups were. the next 2 groups were very good but things were keeping em back.

They play good defense where it counts…see LSU game. They actually had one of the better scoring defenses in the ACC, but the opponents always have more possessions when playing UNC.
Also, if Ty Lawson was 75% in the LSU game, then his 100% is absolutely head and shoulders above 2nd place. Ellington is turning into a scoring machine, Hansbrough is Hansbrough, Davis is playing more and better. Even against LSU’s “monster” defense they scored 80 points. I’m thinking that’s all they’ll need to win it all. However, Gonzaga apparently likes to run, so that one may be a crazy affair.

I’m quite lucky. I have a lovely wife, two great kids and an ever improving golf game.
