I’ve decided to do my own cornhole set. The one I purchased made is worn out. I’m going with a natural finish. I want to put a big sticker on it. The question I have is:

What’s the best clearcoat polyurethane to put on it? Is that even what I need to use?

Any help is appreciated, as I am not all that good at staining/painting.

I’ll try and get a photo up when it’s finished.

ok, this is the only site you need.

http://www.cornholegameplayers.com/

http://www.cornholegameplayers.com/forum/

the shaggy method is the way to paint/stain boards.  i have used it twice myself as have my friends.  it works, it’s in the forums, easy to find.

polycrylic (paint not spray on) you don’t want to use anything else.

decals, you can paint them on, using a projector, a cut out whatever or you can have vinyl (same material as very good window decals or car wraps.)

i chose the vinyl and just recently put them on ... they are pretty tight.  i had a friend manipulate the espn college gameday logo in illustrator.  changing espn to my initials and the word college to corn & ale.  instead of a football in the shield, it’s corncob and hop nugget.

it’s what i use for my twitter avatar.

i need 2 more layers of poly and they are done and will post on here when finished.  once i post the pics i can give you an exact run down of what i did, but if you read the shaggy method on the link above it won’t read nearly as well.  it has taken me a lot of time, stain, seal, tape down, paint, tape down again, tape, poly, sand poly, decal and then i need to poly and be done.

of course it’s usually more than 1 coat of paint and poly.  taking up the garage did not endear me to my wife.

Thanks. I’ll check that out. I’m going for a natural wood look with just a “strutting Ramses” UNC decoration. I’ll paint the sides white with a high gloss paint. We’ll see how it turns out.

That’s pretty cool red. I saw one at the race track, AMS, that a Bamer fan had. He had outlined the entire outside box edge with that lite rope stuff and then the bottomside of the hole for playing at night. It was pretty neat looking.

My neighbor won a pre-made set at a golf tournament a couple weeks ago. I’m going to have to get on him too fancy (redneck) that thing up. grin

Had to take another look. I started on it today. The board are put together. I’m started the decoration today. I’ve decided on natural finish on the board with glossy white on the sides. Hopefully I’ll be done by the middle of football season grin

Did you paint the undersides and legs of your boards? I’m thinking I may just put the polycrylic under there to protect it from the ground. So far I’ve sanded, primed, and sanded the set. As time allows I move forward. I’ve changed my mind as to the look. I’m doing one white and one Carolina Blue with the opposite color border on each. I’ve not decided if I’ll use the same or different logos each one. I’ve got time to figure that out. As I’ve said…. this will be a slow and steady project.

i took my time as well.

the legs i treated exactly as i did the top of the board with regards to paint.  same number of coats.  only did 1, maybe 2 coats of poly
under the board, i did a quick sand, a thin prime and 2 coats of paint.  wasn’t worried to much about the look being near as good as the top, just uniform.  i did do 1 layer of poly as well.  basically it makes the boards look a lil better when carrying and protects the wood some.

if played on concrete or asphault the legs and front edge of board will scrape and expose wood.  just the nature of owning boards.  carrying them around will also ding them up some.

personally, the new NC logo with the new rams head in the middle would look good on the white boards and the old school walking ram from the 80’s would look good on the blue.  just my non important opinion.

Thanks, I’m not to big of a fan of that new Ram Head. I think it looks weird. I like the classic, like my avatar.

Sherwen Williams had a big sale so I bought my paint today. I’ve painted one board white and one Carolina Blue… so far so good. I still have to get the decals.
