MW, I agree with you that the SEC doesn’t seem to give a crap about academics. But IMO that’s more of a cultural culpa of the southeastern US in general.
But Doyel’s column doesn’t seem to be about that. It’s about something much more heinous - the utter lack of honesty and integrity among the ones kids look up to for leadership (head coaches) when it comes to honoring a commitment to a player who made a commitment to you in the first place, many times spurning other schools’ advances in the process.
I do find it ironic, or perhaps hypocritical, that high school students are blasted by fans for waffling on verbal commitments to schools, or de-committing and recommitting elsewhere, yet when coaches pull rank after NSD and enrollment there’s no huge outcry. I say if it becomes commonplace that coaches don’t honor their commitments, then there’s no reason for high school kids to honor theirs. Can’t blame the kids if this is the landscape coaches are creating.
