http://www.ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect/public/ncaa/resources/latest+news/2012/april/university+of+south+carolina+cited+for+failure+to+monitor

A booster(s) gives $51,000 in impermissable benefits that involves 12 student-athletes as well as being party to recruiting violations.

The penalty is:
-3 year probation
-public reprimand and censor
-$18,500 fine
-disassociation from 2 boosters
-limit official visits from 56 (max) to 30
-reduction of scholarships by 3 in 2014 and 2015

Apparently the track and field coach and an assistant basketball coach was also involved with some penalties involved to those programs.

That’s pretty severe punishment for an SEC school. I mean, it was a PUBLIC reprimand at that…......

Let’s hope the idiots in charge at the NCAA don’t get their bonus checks from the folks at ESPN this year; at least that would actually be a little justice handed out for once.

Weak.  ESPN MUST be paying them for a slap on the wrist like that.  Especially a school that was already on probation….hmm.  Whitney hotel???

If S. Carolina’s football team was already on probation as stated then I would think the penalty might be a bit more severe. Oh well, I guess their membership in the $EC has it’s privledges. UNC’s money figure did not add up that amount. Their were no recruiting violations. I’lll admit the tutor stuff and John Blake is additional, but if the football team was already on probation it would seem the second offense would just carry a little bit heavier penalty. Oh well, congrats to S. Carolina on gettin by like it did. I’m no fan of the NCAA’s infraction committee, and the way it gives out punishment. If a school can get by with as little as possible I’m glad for them.

1 student athlete, AJ Green, sells his own jersey for 1k and gets a 4 game suspension….12 or more student athletes receiving many thousands in improper benefits ranging from luxury hotel living with car services to practice to improper booster involvement in recruiting…all this “it’s just SEC bias” aside, something just doesn’t add up with this.

It’s more than just a couple of instances, though. The NCAA has been inconsistent with their delegation of punishments for as long as they have been handing out their reprimands. In my opinion, the NCAA needs to take the time to make a list of violations and the punishments that go along with each violation.

So now the Carolina bias includes both schools? Man the conspiracy just keeps getting bigger and bigger…

Unbelievable and what a great point. The more punishments that come out the more ridiculous AJs suspension looks.

I’m not saying anything about this particular decision, but the NCAA is screwed up. The fact that nobody knows what to expect is a problem. One team gets in trouble and they get to decide to suspend their guys the following year. Another guy gets in trouble and he must be suspended immediately. One school has a problem and gets to adjust their schedule to minimize the impact of the suspensions. One program gets investigated and they’re okay because the offender was the father while another gets in trouble for benefits given to parents. It’s a huge issue if you take a kid to lunch and also buy his mom a hamburger, but the NCAA is silent if you have felons on the team. The whole system needs an overhaul and some sense needs to be brought into it.

I agree the whole system needs an overhaul. FWIW the ncaa said USC was proactive to get down to the truth of the problems and even went further than what they would have done. Wesley Saunders was kicked off the team for the year even though the ncaa said he could play.

The only problem I have with that is that did SCAR go to the NCAA first or did they become “cooperative” once the story broke?......

They reason I say that is because I am left with the belief that you can get your hands dirty, but as long as you cooperate with the NCAA once discovered, you will get an easier penalty.

Now in USC’s case, I belief this is something that the school didn’t know about, but that is on their compliance people IMO.
