I mean its sad and you never want to see it but I just can’t understand.  Especially when NFL players and former NFL players take their own life.  How can things be THAT bad for them, guys making upwards of $375k a year while playing.  Are things really that bad for you?  You have healthy kids, a wife or ex wife, you have a home, you might have some debt here and there but are things really that bad?  Honestly it makes me lose respect for them.  2 of my friends took their own lives, but they were fellow Marines tasked with working mortuary affairs in Iraq in 2003 and 2005…..they see bodies and faces in their dreams constantly, whats wrong.  Both did multiple combat tours.  Looking at it, and in my opinion, these sports stars problems are pretty minuscule.

Again, sad that it has to happen period but…..i don’t know.

Honestly it makes me lose respect for them.

I feel the same way, cheap and disrespectful way to go out.

Although, still have an RIP for Seau, great LB.

The location of the shot makes me wonder if he wanted to preserve his brain for study, like Dave Duerson

I think both of you are being way too hard about this without an autopsy.  Having been involved in sports medicine while in the military, there most certainly is a cumulative effect of concussions.  Seau played for a very long time and was involved in many violent collisions and no doubt has several concussions over his career.  Many athletes don’t report the “minor” ones because they don’t want to be taken out.

A normal, healthy person with no history of brain injury wouldn’t be compelled to take their own life, but a guy with a history of head injury can be capable of such things.

As I said, I think it is wise to sit back and wait for the medical results before passing judgement

Ok, so he was never officially listed as having concussions….why would you not report that.  Your health and life are worth less then playing a few more downs?  Its ridiculous.  And now we have players trying to sue the NFL because they didn’t understand the risks involved coming in.  I think its all stupid.  A police officer doesn’t become a police officer without knowing the risks involved, same with firefighters, same with the military.  Idk, I think its just stupid they try to sue for this stuff.  And I think its stupid that someone would not get treated or report a head injury just so they could play more.

When I was athletic trainer, it was an eye-opening experience.  Players are scared to show injury.  Why?  Because there is always another guy waiting to take you job if you are out.  There are endless stories of how players that get injured get replaced by players and they never get their jobs back..AKA Drew Bledsoe.  Athletes don’t think of the long term.  Also, some players are just tough SOB’s that you have to drag of the field if they get hurt, and others that feel like they are letting the team down by falling out….that is just the way it is.

What a sad story. As a person with a family member who suffers from major refractory depression I can only say his action will be felt throughout the network of family and friends for some time. I’ve heard that major depression and lead to a pain where the heart aches, hurts, and feels like a black hole where all of the person’s joys go and hide forever.

I know very little of the issues surrounding Seau, but it’s sad time. I heard 8 former players for San Diego during his tenure there have died from a myriad of reasons. I know it’s only coincidence. The larger issue surrounding retired NFL players needs to be addressed by the NFL. Head injuries are serious and the issues they bring can last a lifetime.

I’m quite lucky. I have a lovely wife, two great kids and an ever improving golf game.

This is a sad story, but like many of you said I just do not have the same amount of respect I did for the man.

Y’all are harsh… I don’t think any of us can understand what kind of emotions he was going through… For somebody to be desperate enough to end their own life is sad.
