Why UNC should Try To Join The Big 12 With CU and FSU If it happens

I realize we have been trading barbs at each other but if I can have a serious discussion I would like to share this thought with you guys.

I am not UNC fan and most Clemson fans harbor some grudge at UNC.  But business is business and a rivalry is a rivalry.

If I could choose. I would rather UNC seek to move to the Big 12 than GT.  Overall it is a better program in all sports.  Solid BB and they are trying to establish football….

The ACC IMO is dying on the vine.  Everyone has to see that.  Clemson and UNC are both founding members, but all things must come to an end and this is survival of the best.

UNC makes a lot of money from basketball and I think they do okay in football.  To the UNC delegation, look at this hypothetical Big 12 “Eastern Division:

UNC
Clemson
FSU
WVU
Kansas
Kansas State

Surely that must be appealing.  It is more difficult than the current ACC but not so tough that it cannot be competitive.  At a couple of crossover games against the likes of TCU, Oklahoma, Ok State, Texas Baylor of Texas Tech and you have a fresh new look with some really fun match ups…

Just something to think about.  I wouldn’t miss playing about half to 2/3’s off the ACC teams we play now, but there are a few I would like to keep.

I understand what you are saying, but for right or for wrong I assure you that UNC would never consider the Big 12. If the ACC were to die I am afraid we would end up in the Big 10 which I would hate, but I disagree with the idea that the ACC is dying. The ACC isnt dying and actually cannot be ignored if no one leaves. Sure things change if folks leave but again I go back to this thought of the conference dying as a self fulfilling prophesy. It is only dying if you all keep saying it is dying and leave and force it to die, and the national media is starting to get on the bandwagon too which is disappointing.

I have no interest in traveling to Manhattan, Kansas ever again. I have been there and it is as lame as lame can be. Lawrence aint much better but is better I admit.

I want to be in a conference with Clemson, NCSU, UVA, VT, Duke, Wake, GT, FSU, Miami etc. and we have that. I wish WVU could have joined the party but it did not happen and that is water under the bridge.

I understand Clemson fans want football to be the focus, and I think it is and will be in the future in the ACC but I will never understand why you think the Big 12 is somehow the place to be.

In my opinion, UNC is more attractive than Clemson as an expansion candidate. It’s just going to be hard for them to separate from Duke. Also, UNC may feel academically superior to the rest of the Big 12, which in reality they are.

Carolina’s an interesting case in this whole mess. They probably offer more than almost any other candidate, but I don’t think they want anything to do with another league at the moment, hence why no one is really talking about them.

That same mentality could possibly leave them on the outside looking in

To me it would be like packing your dirty clothes back into your suitcase full of clean clothes when you head out on the next leg of your trip….HOWEVER….

I think UNC offers a lot in terms of athletics, I may not like them, but they have good basketball, good baseball, and could potentially one day have good football…...yes, money wise and sports wise they make sense.  But I feel that theres just so much tension between these schools, hence the laundry comment.  I don’t see how you could make a smooth move like that with a school that you basically target as a favorite in the ACC.  Ultimately its not up to Clemson and FSU though, if the Big 12 wanted UNC….hey by all means come on thats life we’ll deal with it and hopefully after leaving the ACC the bias will go away and we’ll have a mega conference in all sports.  But if not, I won’t leave sleep over it because I know that the B12 will already be a powerful force.  And for the record I think GT is only being mentioned because they are ND bait.

Maybe I’m speaking crazy but…..

Would the SEC not be watering at the mouth for a UNC & Duke pair?  Sure….the SEC doesn’t offer much for acedemics (but that argument is stupid in conference realignment IMO) and Duke sucks at everything except maybe basketball, but being the national brand at that and one not going without the other they might be travel partners.  Question is, since the SEC is already at 14 do they take someone like VT & _____ for football or UNC & Duke for basketball to pair with Kentucky.  Potentially, speaking from a pure unbiased sports fan’s view, that could be a powerhouse conference in Baseball, Football, and Basketball.  And we KNOW the SEC won’t make the same mistake and focus just on Basketball.  If I were the SEC commissioner I’d be on the phone with Duke and UNC, talk about a super conference.

I don’t know, just a thought…..I still hate them both LOL

I keep hearing people say that GT is ND bait, but I don’t see where this comes from?  What’s their relation?

From Notre Dame’s perspective, they don’t give a rip about Georgia Tech. Nice relationship with the Jackets, but that’s about it.

The way I see it, you have 2 choices for expansion with ties to ND and the Big 12 has been rumored to be interested in, GT and Pitt.  UNC might be included but is not a target of the B12 currently.  Both GT and Pitt are AAU members and have athletic ties to ND which go back to 1922 and 1909.  Academics and fairly longstanding rivalries of sorts, its attractive to ND.  Thats why they are bait.  Because adding someone like Louisville as ND’s partner does not entice them at all.

If the ACC were to dissolve (which it won’t)... I think North Carolina is best suited for the SEC.

I dont know why you think Duke sucks at everything. I have no love for them but they have one of the top ten athletic departments in the country. Fact is they are GOOD at almost everything save football. Baseball has not been great lately either but unfortunately they have finished ahead of Carolina a few time in the directors cup.

If you follow SEC homeboy sites you would see that Carolina and Duke are coveted by the SEC, its just they know that they would turn their noses up at them so they are never talked about. Hence the NCSU talk. Does anyone on here really think NCSU would be picked over Carolina? Hell State fans know that isn’t true. Believe me I am surrounded by them and they admit it.

The ACC will survive as long as Carolina and Duke are in it and you can take that to the bank. I admit Clemson and FSU may leave although I think Clemson administration has enough sense to stay as they will realize that green grass is really astro turf. Carolina will never be in the big 12 and I seldom say never. Why you guys want to be is beyond me.

And the idea you are running away from bias is laughable. You are going to be a complete also ran to Texas if you get in a league with them. If leaving bias is one of your reasons for trying to get out of the league then the Big 12 is the last place you should be pining for. Texas doesn’t give a crap about Clemson or FSU. They just want whatever makes Texas more money. Hell they are the ones probably standing in your way cause they want an easy path to the BCS without a championship game. Deloss Dodds already is the defacto commish of the conference so this idea that you are waiting for a commissioner to invite you is silly. Why do you think 4 other schools just left? You guys make no sense sometimes.

And as a North Carolina fan I want the ACC to survive at all costs, but if it does not I want Carolina to be in the SEC as a southerner.

Unfortunately I am afraid Carolina would end up in the Big 10 with UVA, Duke and Maryland while State and VT would be in the SEC.

Prime example of money not making things better as the Big 10 makes alot more than the SEC.
