How’s the defense looking under Brent Venables?

Everything we’ve heard has been positive so far, at least everything i’ve heard.  Its so refreshing to see a coach that coaches.  The players have said that under Kevin Steele they didn’t correct mistakes in practice, rather they’d wait until they got into the film room later to talk about it.  Coach V won’t let them move on until the problem is fixed.  The players really seem to enjoy playing again, they say its fun and the scheme is simple unlike Steele’s was.  Look for the defense to be our dark horse this year, especially our LBs.

That’s pretty much what I’ve heard too. We still have a lot of inexperienced guys playing, but they seem to like his scheme and the way he coaches.

I like this.  I heard a quote years ago that sums this up perfectly.  “Losers practice until they get it right, but winners practice until they can’t get it wrong.”

I do have some concerns of Venables’ declining numbers, and I wonder why he’d take a lateral move as a coordinator under a guy who beat him out for the HC job, but everything I’ve seen/heard so far is helping to allay my concerns.  I love his intensity.  While he doesn’t have a particularly innovative scheme like The Chad has (which is a plus after Steele’s complex nightmare), he does seem to have the same attitude and intensity.  To me that makes all the difference.

Clemson’s major problem since Tommy West (aside from admin & BoT obstacles) has been lack of attitude.  People can say what you want about Ford & make hay about the infractions, but he had our team playing w/an intensity & nasty streak that has been lost since he left.  I think Morris & Venables will help restore that somewhat.  We do have a lot of inexperience & a lot of question marks on D this season, but I see a lot of reason to be hopeful.

I’d be concerned about his defense giving up over 40 points 3 times to big XII teams with better players than he will have at clemson.

I’m not really concerned about that at the moment.  The “better players” argument only goes so far, and there are a lot of different variables in play.  Unless he completely craps the bed, which won’t happen, he gets at least a year…& either way, he’s an improvement over Steele.  Of course, SCAR was ranked #3 in total D & still gave up 37 to ECU, 42 to UGA & 44 to Arkansas, so I think we have a bit of wiggle room there.

At least Steele’s defense was 59th. Coach V’s was worse at 62th.

The whole “defensive rankings” argument doesnt really hold water either, as you pointed out with SCAR. What i keep reading is rankings are calculated off per game/season averages when you should be looking at per play averages. Reason being the longers your D is on the field the more yards/points/ToP/etc the other team gets. when you do that with vennables hes in the top 5 every year for quite a while

I’m not really sure what you’re quoting, or when you’re quoting from, but last year Clemson was 71st in total D & Oklahoma was 55th.

http://web1.ncaa.org/mfb/natlRank.jsp?year=2011&rpt=IA_teamtotdef&site=org&div=IA&dest=O

& Oklahoma was better than Clemson in ever major defensive category except passing D & fumble recoveries.

At any rate, it still doesn’t change the fact that I’m not worried at this point about 3 games against Oklahoma State, Baylor & Texas Tech who ranked 3rd/2nd, 2nd/4th & 13th/22nd in total O and scoring O, respectively.

Talk to us next year after Venables’ system is installed and game tested.  Then again, our offense had a new coach & system, as well as many question marks last year, just like our D does this year, & still managed to do pretty well…so maybe we won’t have to wait that long to see ROI.

I wouldn’t use acronyms like ROI with gamedicks fans, you’ll confuse them.  They probably think you just meant to say roids because that’s a term they’re more familiar with.  Plus they’re scale is skewed because a healthy ROI for them is a 2nd place ribbon for their division.

I couldn’t agree more.  When Bowden first showed up, you couldn’t find someone more excited then myself.  However, it became quickly apparent that the team lacked intensity.  When Bowden was on his game and prepared, I would put him up against any coach in the country, but when he would inexplicably take games off, the team would tank as a result.  Groups take on the persona of their leaders, & to watch him look beaten and despondent on the sidelines killed me…& then it killed the team when you’d see them give up on the field.
