Good interview. I think the main problem with the ACC is that the schools that don’t care about football (Wake Forest, Duke, etc) are getting a boatload of money by way of the schools that do care about football (FSU, clemson, etc) Football pays the bills. Why should a school like duke get the same money as clemson or FSU?

Swofford exacerbated the situation with the knee-jerk reaction of adding syracuse and pitt - two basketball schools from the big east. Now FSU, clemson, VT really haven’t held up their end of the bargain either as the 2-13 bcs record indicates but at least they’re trying. Something that cannot be said for all acc shools.

Winning will cure all ills. If the acc can win against the big boys the perception will change. It takes elite players and coaches to win in big time college football. Something I don’t think the acc has yet. It’s no accident that bama wins and pays saban 6 mil.

This is very true.  The problem is, if the ACC did get away from revenue sharing, a mutany would ensue just like the BIG12.  The difference between the 2 is that the ACC has many more basketball schools (and are adding more) so there would be more voices yelling mutany.

Another point that a lot of people keep leaving out on all of this money talk is the donation that come in.  Not all revenue is from TV/attendance money.  Big schools with huge followings like Bama have more alumni, more donors, and more fans.  The fact that their stadium hosts 20K more fans per game should at least be factored in (on top of ticket price markup, etc.).

I know several USC fans on the ESPN board that could use your mentoring.  It is nice to have a good discussion with rivals.  It doesn’t always have to be trash talking….You made very good points…...

Did you catch the bit that Clemson has made more as a result too from revenue sharing? Does the SEC not do the same? Wake went to the Orange Bowl too…I venture to say that sharing revenue benefits FSU too.

I think to change that would be a huge mistake. I just dont get why TV money all that is ever talked about. There is bowl money, shoe deals, radio networks, NCAA tourney distros etc etc. You benefit in your down years by sharing.

Duke has also recently made a huge committment to football with Cutcliffe and the money they are now spending. The results are starting to be seen on the field.

I am going to do something that is against my DNA and that is compliment a UNC fan….I gotta give you credit for carrying the ACC flag when others want to leave.

I have taken an unbelievable amount of heat in my extremely strong support of Dabo on the ESPN boards for the last several years.  In fact, one of the guys I got to come on board, “4schitzngrins” and I have had some really contentious flame wars of my support…....(And I still like him..LOL) But I appreciate your support and as much as I want to leave, if a situation can develop where the ACC is stronger than ever then who would I be to complain?

I hope the ACC is stronger in the end too. I like the ACC, I like Clemson and I like FSU. I like the balance the league has created between all sports and I think the rivalries and membership are stronger than it is given credit for here. I would hate to see that torn up. If yall leave I still believe the ACC will survive but I would be sorry to see you go…and I contend that later on you all would see it as a mistake.

I understand the concerns of Clemson and FSU people. I just think the Big 12 would be very disappointing to you and not live up to expectations like most things in life that you think you want…

I think the Big 12 is that shiny boat in the dealership that seems like it will be so much fun until you realize how expensive it would be to operate, insure and repair. Plus the time you spend in it will not be near as much fun as you think about how much you gave up to get it.

Very true and I’ll admit I did some hating as well, though schiz lead the charge.  While he did make improvements for us last year, I still hold my right to say “Fire DABO!!!”

BTW we should get Clemscott here whenever he comes back from wherever he’s been.

He is probably spooning with “boro”..they are buddies.  But clemscott can be pretty funny when he locks his sights on somebody.  Good poster also. I imagine he has been seeing what is going on over at ESPN and just moves on…..I hope he hasn’t completely checked out

I think we’re both right.  I still think he’s a bad coach, but I think he’s a smart enough guy to realize it and bring coordinators in who can take away the coaching aspect of it and let him stick to the media, player relationships, and motivational speeches.  Before I didn’t think he would realize that but he’s taken the right steps so far.

As I said, I reserve my right to chant “Fire DABO!!”

As of right now, all the member schools are pushing football very hard and so is Swofford, that’s the only thing I really like about Swofford. I think it was about 8-10 years ago Swofford had a stern talking to Duke and UNC and probably others in the conference that they need to get their football programs back on track and I think as of this season or next, they are finally going to peak.

I also have no problems adding Pitt and Syracuse to the ACC, it was a home run hire for basketball and I think both schools can be once again very good in football.

The problem was that Duke, UNC and Wake should have made a strong push in football right when FSU joined the league. After getting beat up 4-5 years in a row they should have gotten tired of that then, but they were content to be bad.

Then those cheating refs are another thing altogether. It cost FSU at the very least a BCS bowl game last year. It nearly cost NC State a NCAA invite. If the refs were actually any good in this conference, I’d bet most of the FSU fans would be rallying to stay in the ACC.

UNC’s problems came from the fact that when Mack Brown left the school chose to let whatever he’d built go to nothing. I’m sure when UNC hired Davis the idea wasn’t to break rules and get a bunch of bad publicity and NCAA punishment. One good thing is that the program isn’t as low as it was when Brown arrived. My hope is Fedora will be the medicine to get the school on the right path. They’ve spent a ton of money to renovate the stadium, and there’s more coming in the next couple of years. I’m sure the school wants the stadium and luxury suites full… winning games will do that.

As for Wake, Duke, BC… they are all small private schools, and I think it’s right to expect them to be competitive. One thing that shouldn’t be expected is to regularly compete at the top of the conference. Miami is a special case, but it’s really yet to be seen if they can win without breaking rules. Butch Davis did it, and that’s kind of ironic.

I’m not sure how the Big12 thing will go, but I think the school’s in play could do a lot worse than stay in the ACC. The conference garners other money outside of TV as referred to previously. One thing that can surely be counted on is having competitve bball. If the presumptive top schools continue to play and improve, and schools like UVa, NCSU, UNC, and even Pitt can improve their play the conference can see success. It is just a matter of winning big OOC games and bowl games. The trajectory of a few schools is pointed in that direction.

We had a coach like that in highschool, He was football savvy, but he wasnt a great coach, but he had great support around him. He reminds me a lot of Dabo actually, kinda younger, not quite inexperienced, but not a tried and true coach either, Great motivational speaker, could get the players rallied up and act like a unit, and we all loved him.

I think Dabo’s really figured out the system that works best for his program, and if it works good for clemson im all for it. We have seen what Morris can dream up, and Vennables is a house hold name when it comes to DCs. As long as Dabo can keep recruiting his pants off to give his coaches what they need then im all for him.

The coach i would want to recommend possible replacement, or atleast scheme shift is Joey Batson our S&C coach. The article below shows that S&C is the best prevention for injuries (Spiller, Watkins, Ellington, Price-Ill have to check and see, but i wanna say we only lost games and Boyd only threw more than 1 int/game when Price went out and it you watch the WVU game they would cut at Price’s ankle until he went out—, etc) and Batson is using an outdated, albeit effective S&C method, however the national contenders are using a new method thats more effective, and helps prevent injuries better.

But he’s a master S&C coach…....right???? Right???  Yeah I’ve been hearing that arguement about Batson for years but each person trains differently.  Notice we don’t have too many defensive players going down.  The only ones that come to mind are Meeks and Stewart (i think he’s kinda prone to it though).  If it’s mainly our star skill players, and our blindside, then you might could chalk that up to dirty players…
