Good column on the Duke Africa trip. Good story you don’t see a lot of places. Enjoyed reading about them and seeing that they are doing good in the world. Ethiopia opened some eyes I’m sure.

It is not heaven on earth and angels are not running the show. Logic is your friend. We cannot all be students of logic but we should at least strive to be a casual fan. GMOs are banned in 50 countries, we cannot even get them labeled as we continue to dance with the elephant in the room. With each new dog and pony show we dance the dance like we were the homecoming queen.

North Carolina gave them classes on African Studies and language before they left.

Okay, okay… enough of the African Studies jokes… we get it… it’s lost its luster now guys.

That was a great thing. Duke’s coach is a class act, and I’m sure he had some part in the trip. It’s something the players will remember for the rest of their lives, I’m sure.  Duke and UNC’s players are friendly as far as baskeball away from the court. When it comes to football, though, there is no relationship. They are not cordial, and do not hang out away from the field. Actually, some of the players on NCSU and UNC’s teams played at the same high schools in N. Carolina, and maintain friendships while in college. Duke’s players are more often from other areas of the country.

I’m quite lucky. I have a lovely wife, two great kids and an ever improving golf game.

I just thought it was really cool that taking a service trip to Ethiopia was the way that the offensive line decided to bond. Many team try to bond by going to an amusement park or something of the sort. I think it is great that Duke’s offensive line decided to bond by providig water to a less fortunate group of people. If Duke’s OL performs at a higher level this season, I think this will have something to do with it.
