When writing this article, I couldn’t help but think that Shaw is extremely underrated as a college signal caller. He is not a tremendous pro prospect, but he is capable of making plays with his feet and he is very accurate when he throws the ball. I think he could be in for a big season this year.

I agree with you. I have always thought he was underrated. I thought he got a bad rap when he came in as a substitute and didn’t think they would suffer when he took over for Garcia. I think he can make throws and can run for yards when he needs them.

It will be interesting to see how he plays this year now that people have some film on him.  You can bet that opponents will strive to keep him in the pocket and make him throw the ball and test Lattimore’s wheels.

FSU is working on bigger fish to fry. Reports from some of the FSU alumni who follow this closely report that Jim Delaney is a huge fan of adding FSU to the Big 10. He seems to be quite impressed that FSU is working toward AAU status. The CIC money awarded to research schools in in the billions. This would help FSU reach AAU status very rapidly.

i live in columbia, and while there are many people who dont understand the game and just enjoy the specticle (i call them cockfans) i have made friends with some people who have football minds, and from watching games with them i quickly discovered that they have a very large ammount of respect for shaw, even as a backup…now they had respect for garcia as well, but mostly because they knew he had gotten them that far before blowing up in his own face

Shaw should have been starting over Garcia the minute he stepped foot on campus.

Solid article Matt…interesting.

I may be in the minority, but I just don’t see Shaw as a top tier SEC QB. He has his moments running the ball and will have them again in 2012…but at the end of the day I do not think he is good enough to get South Carolina to the title game.

He was dreadful in the big loss to Arkansas last season…and lets not pretend Arkansas has a good defense. He threw for only 128 yards and had an interception with no TD passes in that game…and ran for just 24 yards.

He losses Alshon Jeffery, as you mentioned, so that won’t help either. Does anyone think Ace Sanders is a true #1 SEC WR?

Gamecocks better hope Lattimore stays healthy (which hasn’t ever happened) or this could be a letdown season in my mind. But we will see how it plays out…Spurrier may surprise me.

I don’t see him as a big draft prospect or top tier SEC QB either, but he is 100% the guy for USCjr and should have been even when Garcia was there.  He lost his big target, I think Ace is capable, but not a true go to man like Jeffery was.

He looked like Cam frickin’ Newton against us last year.  But, then again, so did a lot of QBs.

You noticed that too….

I think that DeAngelo Smith is going to have a big year at WR for the Gamecocks.

With Shaw and Lattimore together in the backfield, it is going to be extremely tough for opposing defenses to stop the run. Shaw had pretty good success running the ball last year, and he did the majority of his work without Lattimore in the lineup.

I think all of his intangibles are great…toughness and leadership and big play ability…He is not the passer that Wilson is from Ark but all things considered he is up there in the SEC…I think he has a lot of upside even just this year compared to last…
