Again, it really comes down to is ND the matchup? Will they even qualify? Do they get a share even if not playing? Will NBC pick the game up even if Notre Dame isn’t playing but still have a tie in? These are factors we must know.
1) The ACC is currently the sole negotiator of Orange Bowl rights, while the Rose and the Champions Bowls are both two-league deals. That could/should give the ACC some power in determining the sharing of whatever media rights revenue comes in. Let’s say the Orange Bowl fetches a $60 million a year rights deal. But let’s say the ACC sets it up so that it gets $40 million of that, and the other opponent gets $20 million. Is that doable? I don’t know. But I do know the ACC’s the only one set to sit across the table with the TV networks. Unless …
I am one of those fans who look at it and say, the ACC is behind. And even with his reasoning I still see it. Lets say for the sake of argument that the ACC gets Pitt and Syracuse by this time (2014?), and the Pac 12 and B1G stay at 12 each. If the split ends up being 40/20 for the Orange bowl and the shares are divided among conference members then each school gets $2.8mil (40 divided by 14). Which is another problem I have, teams like Duke, BC, Maryland etc getting shares when they have done NOTHING for the conference with losing records and not playing postseason but whatever. Assuming the Rose splits a $80mil pot 50/50, each school in the respective conference will get $3.3mil (40 divided by 12). Falling behind or not is VERY dependent on the split of the Orange bowl, I have no confidence we will see a good enough split to put it on par….I guess its a waiting game. I just feel like between Swofford being stupid and settling for less and Notre Dame wanting a bigger cut while still underachieving, we won’t see a 40/20 split or higher. We’ll see.
