The age old college football argument is:  What’s more important?  Stars or Coaching?

To further that….  I think player development, scheme, and an eye for kids that fit that scheme are of equal—if not, greater—importance.

Interesting article to today’s Daily Press.  Behold….....

Be very curious to get you FSU boys thoughts.

I don’t get it… what is there to discuss?? Virginia Tech can overachieve with all the scrubs they want to get… It’s not like they’re winning national championships.

As for FSU… you act like when we running the show we didn’t have stud players… When we started losing with (arguably) the same caliber players we’ve always had, we fired our coaching staff.

What is your point??... If Frank Beamer doesn’t win a national title soon he probably needs to be fired… or invest more into his program by recruiting better players.

You can talk to Alabama, LSU, or Florida about how important good players are to having success.

One more time with feeling…
Virginia Tech… 1-28 against top 5 teams.
              7-18 against 6-10.
              8-46 against top ten.
Ten wins per season against a weak schedule is crap.
Against #9, 16 , 18, 19 , 20. They finally have a winning record, 22-13.
Does anyone know where Austin Peay is ?
Against ranked opponents… 48-79,  37.9 %.
I now know why they started ranking 25 instead of only 20, to help teams like Virginia Tech improve their stats.

Easy fella, easy!  Didn’t mean it as a bust.  Sensitive much?  Just curious as to why y’all think this is the case.  0-23 is mindboggling.  That’s a lot of talent.  Y’all think it’s coaching?  Bad fits?  Or were some of the players simply overrated?

I’m a big proponent of finding guys that fit your scheme but more often than not 5* kids don’t bust.  Hell… I wish VT could land 23 5* kids. Period.

Without reading the article, alot of those 5 star kids FSU brought in were bust. Many of them, if not all of them left FSU in a year or 2 or did not even have the grades to qualify.

There were a few 5 star players that panned out in the last 10 years like Myron Rolle, Travis Johnson, Greg Reid, so it’s not all bad.

The current coaching staff seems to be doing a better job of talent evaluation than the previous, which includes steering clear of head cases and kids who don’t qualify academically.

Who the hell are you Cub Man? Thanks for the history lesson.  Now, lets put it perspective.

VT wasn’t even in a conference until 1993.  That’s also when our bowl streak started.  Admittedly,  we had no football pedigree prior to that.  None.  Frank built us from the ground up.  Our greatest bowl game in history prior to the Frank was the Peach Bowl in the mid-1980s.  That’s it.  So…......

Since then we are 6-15 through 2009.  (That’s when the database stops so you can add in 2010-12 if you want.)  Doesn’t sound great but then again there is a reason why those teams are top 10 much less top 5.  This just in:  They’re really good.

For comparison, from 1993-2009 Clemson was 5-15, Bama was 11-24, LSU was 15-30, Arkansas was 5-28, Georgia was 10-24, Texas was 10-21, WVU was 5-13.  Only a few were actually .500 or better: FSU was 21-20, Florida was 31-21, USC was 17-12, and Michigan had the best record of 23-14.  That’s it.

So by your logic only four teams are good.  Everybody else sucks.  LOL.

And, yeah, I’m disappointed with the schedule—especially as a ticket holder—but it picks back up big time next year with Bama in the opener.  Also have a home and home with tOSU in 2014 and 2015 and Wisconsin in 2016 and 2017.  And given that we’ve had home and homes with LSU, aTm, and Nebraska and played Bama, USC, and Boise in openers all in the last 10 years, then I’d say we schedule pretty damn tough.

Your “facts” are so pathetic that you sound like a UVa fan looking for something to get over on VT.  Get some perspective and do some research.  Anybody can regurgitate the BS the E$(EC)PN puts on for propaganda every weekend.  Do some research, sheep.

Thanks.  Nice to get a well thought out answer.  Did you expect more out of those folks, though?  I know with VT that’s rarely the case but then again we rarely land a 5*.  Marcus Vick was a bust, but not because of ability.  He was actually All-ACC in 2005 as a RS-Soph which was his first and last year as a starting QB.  Just a knucklehead.

Out of the 5 stars that panned out, I think we expected a little more from Myron Rolle. It’s a little hard to be disappointed with him since he was such a great representative of FSU. From what I remember, he and Percey Harvin were neck and neck for being the top recruit in the country. Perhaps Myron would have been better if he stayed for his senior year instead of studying medicine abroad.

I remember sitting in the stands saying “we got tons of talent, but nobody’s teaching these kids how to play ball”... Is that what you wanna hear??... then 3 years later Bobby out and Jimbo in.

I think NCSU is about to become the next VT of the past 20 years, building a winner out of 3 star players as it looks like VT is consistently getting more and more 4 stars.

So what changed with Bobby?  He was getting results before. Do you think Jimbo is on the cusp of getting it to “click” for a few of these kids? Those are the kinds of things I wanna hear.

I swear….it is like pulling teeth to get any discussion from you unless it’s topic about how awesome FSU could be…..but then again, that’s every year.

O’Brien is a solid coach.  Has always been a winner. Recruits well to his system.  Similarly, to VT though it’s the inability to land elite talent that’s kept them from getting over the top.  Like you said, though, VT appears to be beginning to turn the corner.

The ” facts” came from the Virginia Tech website.
Name calling , really ?
The facts were all time not select years.
And,  who is Austin Peay, the school that is ?
Why are you so irate ? Could you be fearful VT will move to the SEC and lose each week ?
How many National Championships does VT have ? Oh, I forgot , that would be facts, those nasty facts again.
Isn’t it fun acting like we are five years old again ?
I guess IKE was President when I was five or was it Truman ?

Facts are facts. Sorry you don’t like them.  VT won’t be in the $EC. End of story If so, we’d be an 8-4 type team.  VT has zero MNCs.  Austin Peay is located in Tennessee. I’m in my mid 30s. I don’t who was President when you were five.

Anything else I can help you with?

I like the facts, you are the one who needs to spin them.
Not in a conference ? Usually in a conference means you play a tougher schedule.
See Penn State’s independent years for example.
I was calling Joe a fraud in the 70’s and 80’s for his lame independent schedule.
Bobby’s last ten years was 4.8 loses per season average.
Jimbo is doing better than that, but it does take a while.
Unrealistic expectations is what fans have always and that is good.
Facts ARE facts and what I quoted is on the VT website , look it up.
No Nat’l Championships ? 1-28 against top 5 teams.
Why brag when you have nothing to brag about ?
