Making Venison Stew:
Merlot
Tender Loin
Rutabagas
Carrots (none of this baby carrot shit either)
Celery

Salt and Pepper

Its been in the slowcooker about 12 hours now, i think im going to go home at lunch and add a packet of mushroom gravy powder and a can of corn, and serve it over rice
Anyone have any other suggestions?

well,
when i was buying the veggies i was going to use red potatos, but they had rutabagas cleaned and chopped and onsale, so i figured id save myself some work. Ive never used them like this but i figured it will be ok, and the pieces are pretty big so if they suck i can pull them out.

Sounds like you’re off to a good start.  I’d probably hold off on the mushroom gravy.  Keep it simple.  Crush a couple cloves of garlic (so you can take them out later if you want).  Maybe add some beef stock.  Do you know how to make a roux?  Simmer the beef stock in a fry pan and slowly add the roux and keep stirring like you’re making gravy (cuz you are).  The flat bottom of a spatula works great.  Not too thick.  Add it to the pot.

i dont really have time for that at this point, but i might throw in a bullion cube and some garlic, the mushroom gravy was a 2 fold purpose, to thicken it up a bit, and my roommate doesnt eat mushrooms but i really like them, so it gives me a way to add mushroom flavor without adding shrooms

I almost never use those sauce packets.  It seems to make the flavor taste artificial, like it’s trying too hard to be mushroom-y.  If you put the beef cube in some water, nuke it to boiling and thorougly mix in a TSP or 2 of flour you’ll get the same result

A couple of tablespoons of tomato paste added to the big pot goes well with that to give it a full flavor.

well i went home and added a dash of tobasco, garlic and beef bullion, i turned the slowcooker back up to try to boil off some of the extra liquid, its very good but the broth is still kinda thin. also added some corn niblets and cut greenbeans. when i get home ill test again and add some tomato paste if it needs it, all else fails ill just undercook the rice a bit and pour excess broth over that at the end. i cant wait to eat it. tastes 10 kinds of awesome

That photo makes me hungry even after I just finished dinner. I hope it was as good as it looks.

Cumin, red pepper and extra virgin olive oil.

Add it.
