Hey everyone.

I am thinking of writing an article about the debate for or against a College Football Playoff.  I thought up some questions which could provide me with some statistical research, and I wanted to get your opinions and answers.  Here it goes:

1.  Would you prefer the current BCS System or a 16-team College Football Playoff (all conference champs, 5 at-large bids)?

2.  Given your current financial status, would you or are you able to make travel plans to follow your team for 3 to 4 away games, regardless of location?  Would you drive or fly if so?

3.  Would you be willing to travel to watch a playoff game in adverse winter weather (below 20 deg F, possible snow/ice)?

4.  Which do you think would generate more excitement for fans, a playoff or bowl games?

5.  If you were a player or auxilliary (band, cheerleader, etc.) do you feel your acacemic schedule would be greatly hampered by a playoff?

Thank you for any help with this.  Take care for now!

I don’t like the number 16, 8 is ok, love 4 team playoff ... so if it’s 16 or BCS, i choose BCS.

2.  Given your current financial status, would you or are you able to make travel plans to follow your team for 3 to 4 away games, regardless of location?  Would you drive or fly if so?

it’s not finances it’s family that would keep me away.  3-4 games is A LOT to ask any fan base and BIG fly in the ointment.

3.  Would you be willing to travel to watch a playoff game in adverse winter weather (below 20 deg F, possible snow/ice)?

yes

4.  Which do you think would generate more excitement for fans, a playoff or bowl games?

playoffs

5.  If you were a player or auxilliary (band, cheerleader, etc.) do you feel your academic schedule would be greatly hampered by a playoff?

auxillary, yes ... players no (most players have a lot of help & take easy majors.)

Thank you for any help with this.  Take care for now!

Getting the pulse of the fan. Excellent, Nathan. From a USC fan with an inexplicable affinity for the ACC…

1.  Would you prefer the current BCS System or a 16-team College Football Playoff (all conference champs, 5 at-large bids)?

Differences in the various playoff proposals aside, I would definitely take the 16-team playoff over the current system. Any true playoff (to wit: not just a mere plus-1) is an upgrade over the current system.

2.  Given your current financial status, would you or are you able to make travel plans to follow your team for 3 to 4 away games, regardless of location?  Would you drive or fly if so?

I am not of a financial status that even allows me to travel to one post-game as is today, so to me going to 3-4 post-games is a moot point. But IMO I don’t think 3-4 post-games is a valid reason to nix a playoff. I’m guessing that the true big-money boosters have the means to follow their team anywhere, so it would be a moot point for them also. Still, it’s not like that if fans couldn’t make it to the game they wouldn’t watch on TV. And TV ratings are huge in college football.

3.  Would you be willing to travel to watch a playoff game in adverse winter weather (below 20 deg F, possible snow/ice)?

Yes, assuming the status of the game and/or the opponent. Football is an outside sport anyway, so weather is no excuse. Unless you’re one of those dome pansies.

4.  Which do you think would generate more excitement for fans, a playoff or bowl games?

Playoff, for certain. The more college football games, the happier the rabid fans are. It’s a more equals better thing.

5.  If you were a player or auxilliary (band, cheerleader, etc.) do you feel your acacemic schedule would be greatly hampered by a playoff?

Given the immense time constraints in place already, the extra demand created by a playoff wouldn’t be that much more. Plus if basketball players are okay with their schedules, 2 games a week with many instances being a road-and-road travel, football should be okay as well. Again, if players of the FCS and the lower divisions can do it, so can FBS players. But cheerleaders and band, hard to say really. I do think for those schools that are football-first, there would be a way to work that out.

1.  I would prefer a 16 team playoff, but I think an 8-team playoff would be more economically feasible.

2.  I would not be able to travel to 3 or 4 away games. If I had the means to, I would.

3.  Dude. Filling up a stadium in the middle of a storm is the definition of awesome.  I’d still go.

4.  I think a playoff would generate more excitement for fans.

5.  If I were a player, I wouldn’t worry about it hampering my academics.  I’d worry about not having any time to spend with my family over break.  If I were a band member/cheerleader, I think it’d be a bit less of a strain.

5.  If you were a player or auxilliary (band, cheerleader, etc.) do you feel your acacemic schedule would be greatly hampered by a playoff?  No.  I played college baseball (i.e. at least three game days a week- usually four) and maintained a 3.2 GPA in college.  The academic excuse may be the lamest excuse period.  It’s all about planning not to take as difficult classes, taking a slightly smaller load, and PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY.  I’m not a genius and I got it done.

Thank you for any help with this.  Take care for now!
