2009 SoCon Preview

By Josh Buchanan

SouthernPigskin.com Staff Writer Josh Buchanan, the leading authority on SoCon football, releases the most in-depth league preview around.

2009 SoCon Preview: Can ASU make it five in a row?

This could be one of the most unpredictable years in recent memory with five or six teams boasting the talent to have a winning record and earn a spot in the rankings. The problem is that with all of these teams facing each other there will likely be a team like Georgia Southern last year with better talent than their record will indicate.

The league standings could flip flop weekly and we could see surprises from 3rd through 9th all year long as Appalachian State and Elon are the only two teams who seem as locks to finish at the top and make a postseason appearance. This is the toughest order of finish to predict in several years.

ASU is projected to finish first with 20 starters back highlighted by All-Americans quarterback Armanti Edwards, safety Mark LeGree, and linebacker Jacque Roman.

Elon, predicted to finish second, has plenty of talent back on offense with quarterback Scott Riddle and wide receiver Terrell Hudgins, however, they do need to improve defensively. The good news is that defensive lineman Eric Ludwig and cornerback Terrell Wilson are back.

Georgia Southern is the sleeper team to watch, especially when you consider their four-game stretch last season where they lost to Elon, Wofford, and Appalachian State by a combined four points. They have a more experienced offensive line and several young players who gained valuable experience last year. They are highlighted by the return of linebackers J.B. Shippy, Dion Dubose and kicker Adrian Mora. The big question for them is the defensive line.

Furman is a tough team to gauge because they don't have the star power we usually see entering the season. Head coach Bobby Lamb will likely have some unknown stars who will step up, but right now there are questions on the offensive line and on defense, two areas where there usually aren't questions. The progression of the defense will be key as just three established standouts return. Success will depend on the emergence of unknown but potential stars like cornerback Ryan Steed. Furman is fourth in the standings with a chance to surprise due to their history of reloading on the offensive line and their weapons offensively. The Paladins recently added UCLA transfer Chris Forcier under center.

From here on out the standings could be in any order as Samford, Wofford, The Citadel, and Western Carolina all have the talent to finish with a winning record.

With solid play at quarterback and a sound running game, Furman, Samford, and Wofford are predicted to finish next in the pack as they all have solid players returning but have serious question marks.

The Citadel is projected to finish 7th and are the wild card as they potentially have the best player in the league, wide receiver Andre’ Roberts, and have solid play on both lines.

Western Carolina played a bevy of freshmen and sophomores last year and should show signs of life under second-year coach Dennis Wagner. They are led by quarterback Zack Jaynes, running back Quan Warley, and safety Mitchell Bell. They had a stellar pass defense last year and look to improve on that as well. Don’t be surprised if the Catamounts are picked to finish in the top five of the order next year if they do what is expected this year by playing many close games and maybe pull an upset near the top of the pecking order.

It is always tough to pick the last place team in the SoCon because anyone could fall apart with the talent levels so tight in this league. This year Chattanooga has that dubious distinction due to poor play on the lines and the lack of a senior talent to get them out of the SoCon cellar.

Below is a look at my projected order of finish, all-conference teams and a look at team personnel.

Predicted Order of Finish
1. Appalachian State 10-1, 8-0
Return plenty of talent and depth; Can Armanti Edwards win back-to-back Payton Awards?

2. Elon 9-2, 7-1
Plenty of starters return led by WR Terrell Hudgins and QB Scott Riddle; defense must become consistent..

3. Georgia Southern 8-3, 6-2
OL returns in tact with plenty of weapons offensively; defensive front has questions but, as usual, a great collection of linebackers return.

4. Furman 6-5, 5-3
QB Jordan Sorrells among the most underrated signal callers in FCS but still needs to become more consistent; NG Justin Brown and S Max Lerner headline a young defense.

5. Samford 6-5, 4-4 (tie)
RB Chris Evans is among the best in the FCS; Bulldogs are led defensively by a solid DL and LB Bryce Smith.

5.Wofford 5-7, 4-4 (tie)
Losing plenty of talent but Mike Ayers always finds a way to reload; C Trey Johnson, OG Pat Illig among the most underrated in FCS.

7. The Citadel 5-6, 3-5
WR Andre’ Roberts is a big time NFL prospect and could go as high as the 3rd round: defensive front returns two of the best in the SoCon.

8. Western Carolina 2-9, 1-7
WCU fans might not like this projection right now but patience comes to those who wait and 2010 could be a possible playoff year; there are four potential tar leaders on offense with QB Zack Jaynes, RB Quan Warley, and WRs Pittman and Thomas.

9. Chattanooga 2-9 0-8
This could be a tough year for the Mocs with road games against Alabama , ASU, GSU, Samford, and Elon; LB Joseph Thornton again anchors the defense.

Preseason Players of the Year
Offensive Player of the Year: QB Armanti Edwards, Appalachian State, Sr.
It is hard to name anyone else here when you have the reigning Offensive Player of the Year and Walter Payton Award winner back after passing for 2,902 yards and rushing for 941 yards while posting a SoCon-record 41 touchdowns responsible for. He only threw two picks in 224 regular-season pass attempts and set a school record with 176 passes without an interception before his meltdown against Richmond in the playoffs.

Others considered: WR Andre Roberts, The Citadel, Sr.; WR Terrell Hudgins, Elon, Sr.

Defensive Player of the Year: FS Mark LeGree, Appalachian State, Jr.
Last season was one of the most confusing years in defensive awards in how the SoCon voted and how the nation voted for the best defender in the league. The coaches and media around the SoCon felt ASU LB Jacque Roman is the best and while he is a very good player there is no question that Mark LeGree was the favorite in the eyes of national voters as he finished third in the Buck Buchanan Award balloting and was named a first team All-American, as was Roman, with 10 interceptions and 17 passes defended. He also tallied 58 tackles, three for loss, a sack, and a forced fumble.

Others considered: None.

Offensive Lineman of the Year: OG David Harrison, Elon, Sr.
While the coaches and media might select Mario Acitelli in the preseason Harrison , 6’2 300 pounds, gets the nod as a returning 1st team All-SoCon selection by the league’s coaches. He enters the season as a projected starter for the fourth straight year, is a team captain, and one of the strongest players in the league. He was key in leading Elon to second in the Southern Conference and 24th in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision in passing offense with 244.5 aerial yards per game last fall.

Others considered: OT/OG Mario Acitelli, Appalachian State, Sr.; C John Weber, Samford, Sr.; OT Chris Werden, Elon, Sr.

Top NFL Prospect: WR/RS Andre’ Roberts, The Citadel
Despite what many around the league and the media say about the best player in this league, it is really Andre’ Roberts. His performance against Clemson is one that should be seen by anyone doubting this tremendous talent and keep in mind that two of those starters were drafted by the NFL and two more will likely be drafted (surely after Roberts) in the 2010 NFL Draft. He is quick, shifty, has excellent hands, catches the ball well, and will produce on special teams as a rookie. He finished with 1,334 yards and 14 touchdowns to earn AFCA and 1st team All-America honors as a junior. Roberts, a two-time All-American and All-SoCon selection, is also a track star having placed third in the 4x100m relay to earn All-SoCon honors in a second sport. Surprise Roberts is rated that high?... Don’t be! He is the ideal slot receiver at 5’11, 190 pounds and ran a 4.43 and 4.48 40-yard dash for NFL scouts at his junior pro day. NFL sources expect Roberts to go somewhere in the 3rd-4th round range and earn an invite to the Senior Bowl, with a good senior year. He is also my #1 2010 Small School NFL Draft Prospect and could sneak into the top 60 selections with a 4.3 40 and quality showing in the postseason.

Other Prospects: WR Terrell Hudgins, Elon; QB Armanti Edwards, Appalachian State, CB Cortez Gilbert, Appalachian State.
