BOONE, N.C. - Dominique McDuffie recovered a fumble and returned it 50 yards for the deciding touchdown, as Appalachian State University football defeated S.C. State, 20-13, in the opening round of the NCAA Division I FCS playoffs.

The Mountaineers intercepted three passes on the Bulldogs' first five drives to overcome an early 3-0 deficit. Appalachian took its first lead of the game at 10-3 when Armanti Edwards connected with Brian Quick in the back of the endzone for a seven-yard score in the second quarter.

SCSU tied the score on a 46-yard interception return with a minute to play in the half, but Jason Vitaris connected on a 24-yard field goal as time expired to give ASU a 13-10 advantage at the intermission.

A S.C. State field goal tied the game in the third quarter and the teams remained even at 13 all for the next 16 minutes.

With just under eight minutes to play in the game, S.C. State lined up for the go-ahead field goal, but snapped the ball errantly towards midfield, where McDuffie recovered the loose ball and took it all the way for the game's final score.

Edwards completed 18-of-30 pass attempts for 218 yards, while Quick was the game's leading receiver with 92 yards on six catches.

Ed Gainey led the Apps with nine tackles in addition to an interception, while Mark LeGree and Daniel Finnerty also collected picks as well. The interception was the first of Finnerty's career.

The Apps await the winner of Saturday's Elon-Richmond contest.
