Edwards, Riddle Battling

By the SouthernPigskin.com Staff/Release

Appalachian State QB Armanti Edwards surpasses Elon QB Scott Riddle as the SoCon's all-time leading passer.

BOONE, N.C. — With his 415 passing yards in Saturday’s 44-34 win over Wofford, Appalachian State University quarterback Armanti Edwards (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood) surpassed current Elon signal-caller Scott Riddle as the Southern Conference’s all-time leading passer.

With the 415-yard performance against Wofford, Edwards upped his career passing total to 8,509 yards and moved past Riddle, who has 8,487 career yards through the air, atop the SoCon’s all-time passing chart. On Sept. 26, Riddle won the race to break the previous conference record of 7,824 career passing yards, set by East Tennessee State’s Greg Ryan from 1993-06. Elon was idle on Saturday.

Edwards now holds SoCon records for career passing yards, total offense (12,474 yds.), rushing yards by a quarterback (3,965) and touchdowns responsible for (122).

The battle for the top spot on the SoCon’s all-time passing list will likely continue throughout the rest of the season, as Riddle (299.8 ypg) and Edwards (281.6 ypg) rank seventh and eighth, respectively, this season in passing yards per game. However, even if Edwards finishes atop the list this year, his reign as the league’s all-time leading passer will probably be short-lived, as Riddle has another season of eligibility remaining.
