Heisman Hopefuls

By B.J. Bennett

SouthernPigskin.com Senior Editor B.J. Bennett looks at the south's top Heisman contenders. Follow us on Twitter at Twitter.com/SouthernPigskin

1. Tim Tebow, Florida - The numbers aren't quite what they were in 2007 or 2008, but Tebow is only concerned with one number; he is 18-0 since his teary promise following the Ole Miss loss last season. There isn't a tougher competitor or more proven winner in college football. Tebow's four touchdowns in a stomping of rival Georgia was a big boost for his Heisman Trophy campaign.

09 stats - 99 of 153 (64.7%), 1,323 yards, 10 TD, 4 INT; 551 rushing yards, 8 TD's
Biggest Strengh - Leadership
Biggest Question - Unrealistic expectations

2. Mark Ingram, Alabama - The offensive workhorse for the undefeated Crimson Tide, Ingram has emerged as one of the most productive running backs in the nation. He is one of just five tailbacks to have already topped the 1,000-yard mark this season. With Alabama near the top of the national polls, his stock is rising.

09 stats - 153 carries, 1,004 yards (6.6 ypc), 8 TD's; 19 catches, 186 yards, 3 TD's
Biggest Strength - The top playmaker for an undefeated team
Biggest Question - A relatively new Heisman contender who lacked early season hype

3. C.J. Spiller, Clemson - The last couple of weeks, Spiller has moved from a darkhorse candidate to one of the hottest Heisman Trophy candidates in the nation. One of the most dynamic talents in ACC history, Spiller continues to make big plays a variety of different ways every single Saturday.

09 stats - 113 carries, 574 yards (5.1 ypc), 4 TD's; 18 catches, 267 yards, 2 TD's; 3 KO TD's, 1 PR TD
Biggest Strength - Versatility
Biggest Question - Team's record

4. Eric Berry, Tennessee - The best defensive player in college football, Berry is more than just a ballhawking safety. He has as many tackles as Alabama All-American linebacker Rolando McClain to go along with seven passes defended. Berry is the unquestioned leader for the SEC's third ranked defense.

09 stats - 57 tackles, five tackles for loss, 6 pass deflections, 1 interception
Biggest Strength - Playmaking ability and reputation
Biggest Question - Team's record

5. Josh Nesbitt, Georgia Tech - It was a sloppy start to the season in some ways for Nesbitt, but few players in college football have been as key to their team's success as Nesbitt the last month and a half. The do-it-all Yellow Jacket quarterback has become unstoppable almost in Paul Johnson's triple option offense.

09 stats - 48 of 101 (47.5%), 1,172 yards, 6 TD's, 3 INT's; 118 carries, 763 yards, 13 TD's
Biggest Strength - Team's offensive success
Biggest Question - Non-traditional quarterback

Thoughts
Alabama's Rolando McClain should be a Heisman Trophy contender, but he won't get legitimate attention as Mark Ingram will get the majority of the attention from his football team. Georgia Tech's Josh Nesbitt won't get the attention he deserves either. He is doing an amazing job overseeing the triple option offense and is putting up Playstation-like numbers. You have to be stunned at the consistency of Florida under Tim Tebow.

Rolando should win the Heisman. It is Defense that has won for the Crimson Tide , not offense. If the Defense fails to show up they will lose. Perhaps there is someone on the defensive team who can throw a pass since there isn’t on the offensive team. “sideline pass incomplete”, “deep pass incomplete”, look at the Stats !!!
