*This is a better win for Virginia Tech than people might think. Thursday night road games are brutal for the visiting team and the atmosphere was a rowdy one for the homestanding Pirates. Remember, East Carolina is the defending Conference USA champions and defeated both Virginia Tech and West Virginia last year. Some sloppy moments and some areas that need improvement, but overall this is the brand of VT football we are accustomed to. Power running, suffocating defense and sound special teams play.
*Give Ryan Williams a helmet sticker, a hug and a week off from practice. The freshman was an absolute beast for Virginia Tech Thursday night, rushing for a career-high 179 yards. After a tough week against North Carolina, Williams responded in a huge way in a tough environment on the road. In a game where his team needed him, Williams answered the call. A gritty, tough effort from one of the nation's best tailbacks. As a fan of football, you have to like seeing a young guy rebound after a tough moment. Great job, Ryan.
*Points are the only numbers that matter from a defensive perspective. The other statistics are nice window dressing, but the number next to the team name on the scoreboard is what wins and losses football games. With that in mind, give the Virginia Tech defense a round of applause. They limited East Carolina to just three points, the Pirates' lowest point total of the season by far. ECU had scored 38 and 49 points in their last two games.
*How about the play of Virginia Tech front seven? They were all over East Carolina quarterbacks Patrick Pinkney and Josh Jordan. The pass rush was the catalyst for the aforementioned defensive success the Hokies had. When you get after the passer, good things happen. Bud Foster did a great job of dialing up the blitz on key downs.
*Call us lame or suckers, but there's something kind of cool about Lou Holtz calling son Skip's football game. Lou is one of the all-time greats in college football and Skip is a rising star in the game today. You had to love the fact that Lou was sporting the purple tie in the booth.
