Nickell Robey was thought to be a solid UGA commit but now is opening up is recruitment.
It's not a secret the University of Georgia has struggled this fall on the defensive side of the ball. The radio call in shows and message boards have been blowing up with rumors of Georgia Defensive Coordinator Willie Martinez being let go at the end of the year. Following the Tennessee game, the rumors were at fever pitch.
It appears those rumors are beginning to spread down on the recruiting front as well. Frostproof Florida High School's Nickell Robey is a focused, student of the game who happens to have one of the best breaks on the ball in the country. He has a freakish skill set to go along with an equally impressive grade point average. That's not news. Any high school recruit who runs 4.3 over 40 yards and offers a vertical jump close to 40 inches is going to attract attention. In Robey's case, the sensational shut down corner had schools from all across the country traveling to Frostproof last spring during the evaluation period to give their best pitch. In Georgia's case, the pitch was strong and over this past summer Robey gave the Dogs his verbal commitment.
According to Frostproof Head Coach Brad Metheny, Robey is still committed to Georgia but has now decided to look around some. "With the rumors floating out there about Coach Martinez being let go at the end of the season, Nickell told me this morning he is still committed to Georgia, but wants to look around some" said Metheny this afternoon from his office at Frostproof High School.
Last week Tennessee's Defensive Coordinator Monte Kiffen flew down to Frostproof for one last pitch to Robey and apparently the trip has paid off. "Coach Kiffen came down and visited with Nickell. After the camp Nickell had in Knoxville this summer, Coach Kiffen said he wanted one more last shot to get a visit" Metheny said. After discussing the situation with his family, it appears Robey now will be making an official visit to Tennessee. "He's still committed to Georgia, but at the same time he also doesn't feel comfortable with the rumors flying around about the defensive staff at Georgia leaving. He wants to keep his options open and take a few trips" Metheny said. "He's committed, but it's a soft verbal I'd say".
A national recruit before his commitment to Georgia, Robey had his choice of schools. So the obvious question is what are Robey's winter travel plans? "He's going to take a trip to Tennessee, South Florida and West Virginia" Metheny said.
With Robey reopening up his recruitment one has to think coaches from across the country will again find their way to Frostproof. Including Georgia, who is very much in play. The soft verbal isn't slowing down Georgia. "Coach Martinez and Coach McClendon called today and are coming in on Friday to visit with Nickell', Metheny said.
