SouthernPigskin.com SEC Writer Jeremy Hillman reviews week nine in the SEC.
We are late in the third quarter of the season, and the clock is ticking. Teams are fighting for wins, bowl positions, rankings and upsets. Week 9 in the SEC gave us plenty of excitement and further confirmed who is on the rise and who is on the decline. Here is my week 9 review:
SEC Coach of The Week: Lane Kiffin Head Coach, Tennessee (with black uniforms and a solid game plan, Kiffin and the Vols dismantled South Carolina on Saturday and continued to look like a much improved team in the second half of the season)
SEC Offensive Player Of The Week: Anthony Dixon RB Mississippi State (In a much needed win over Kentucky, Dixon rumbled for 252 yards on the ground, scored two touchdowns, and added two catches for 14 additional yards)
SEC Defensive Player Of The Week: Walter McFadden CB Auburn (McFadden tallied 5 tackles, grabbed two interceptions, and took one of them to the endzone, in Auburn’s upset win over Ole Miss)
Three UP:
1. Florida (just when it looked like Florida had a few weaknesses, they go out and steam roll Georgia…again)
2. First Year Coaches (All three first year coaches in the SEC grabbed huge wins on Saturday. Chizik and Auburn upset Ole Miss, Mullen and Mississippi State upset Kentucky, and Kiffin and Tennessee upset South Carolina)
3. LSU defense (this unit is looking better and better as the season rolls along. After disrupting the Auburn spread offense a week ago, the LSU defense shut out Tulane this weekend in Baton Rouge...setting up a big game at Alabama on Saturday)
Three DOWN:
1. Ole Miss (The Rebels are the biggest disappointment in the SEC this season. After being heralded as potential national title contenders, Ole Miss has looked poor most of the season and falls to 2-3 in the conference)
2. Georgia (Not many people expected Georgia to be just 4-4 after 8 games this season. They are struggling on both sides of the ball, after getting routed at the Cocktail Party)
3. South Carolina Offense (the Gamecocks are 95th in the country in scoring offense. They have only scored 33 total points in the last 3 games…a dismal 11 points per game average)
Top 5 Players in The SEC – Updated after Week 9:
1. Tim Tebow QB Florida (after having 164 passing yards, 85 rushing yards and 4 total touchdowns in the rout of Georgia, Tebow moves back to the top of the list with 1,323 yards passing, 551 yards rushing and 18 total touchdowns on the season)
2. Mark Ingram RB Alabama (Bye week for Alabama. Ingram will get his shot at SEC Player Of The Year in the game against LSU this next weekend)
3. Ryan Mallett QB Arkansas (With 250 yards passing and 48 yards rushing in a blowout win against Eastern Michigan, Mallett surpassed the 2,000 yard passing mark and has tallied 19 touchdowns on the season)
4. Ben Tate RB Auburn (Tate had 144 yards rushing and a touchdown in the Ole Miss win. He is the SEC’s leading rusher with 1,063 yards on the ground)
5. Anthony Dixon RB Mississippi State (With a huge game in a big win versus Kentucky, Dixon surpassed the 1,000 rushing yards mark and has 8 touchdowns on the season…this is without playing in the first game)
