SEC Review Week Seven

SouthernPigskin.com SEC Writer Jeremy Hillman reviews week seven in the SEC.

Seven weeks into the SEC football season, the upsets, big wins, surprises and disappointments continue. What players have stepped up? What teams are down? Where will your team go bowling? Find my answers to these questions, and more, in this weeks’ review of the action:

SEC Coach of The Week: Rich Brooks, Kentucky Head Coach (the Wildcats beat Auburn for the first time since 1966. The quality road win improves Kentucky to 3-3 on the season and keeps them in the hunt for a bowl birth again this season)

SEC Offensive Player Of The Week: Mark Ingram, RB Alabama (Ingram ended up with an eye popping 246 yards rushing and a TD, in the win over South Carolina)

SEC Defensive Player Of The Week: Micah Johnson LB Kentucky (Johnson racked up 14 tackles in the big road win over Auburn and was a big part of Wildcats ability to slow down the usually potent Tiger run game)

Three UP:
1. Alabama (the Crimson Tide moved to 7-0 on the season and beat another quality opponent, in top-25 ranked South Carolina. The AP poll placed Alabama #1 this week for the first time this season)
2. Randall Cobb WR Kentucky (Cobb is slowly moving himself into position to battle for a spot on the ALL-SEC team at the end of the season. In the last two games…at South Carolina, and at Auburn…Cobb has amazed 200 yards rushing, 2 rushing touchdowns, 3 receptions for 74 yards, and a receiving touchdown)
3. Anthony Dixon RB Mississippi State (Dixon lead the Bulldog offensive charge, and became the all time leading rusher in Mississippi State history, during Saturdays win at MTSU)

Three DOWN:
1. Auburn passing game (It looks as if Chris Todd’s arm/shoulder may be tiring again after off-season surgery. His passes do not look as sharp or accurate as they did in big wins to start the season and it is limiting the effectiveness of the passing game)
2. Arkansas special teams (a painful loss to Florida on Saturday was in part due to two missed field goals. One miss was a makeable kick in a key game winning situation, late in the fourth quarter)
3. Larry Smith QB Vanderbilt (Smith is struggling throwing the football. He finished a dismal 11 of 26 for just 121 yards against Georgia. 42% completion rates are not going to work in the SEC…or anywhere for that matter)

Top 5 Players in The SEC – Updated after Week 6:
1. Mark Ingram RB Alabama (Ingram has racked up over 1,000 yards of total offense already this season, not to mention 11 touchdowns. He is a legitimate Heisman candidate at this point)
2. Tim Tebow QB Florida (Tebow isn’t having quite the season that some were looking for, but he is leading the offense and making tough runs when he has to, and has helped his team to an undefeated start)
3. Ryan Mallett QB Arkansas (Mallet has lit up defenses for 1,649 passing yards and 15 touchdowns in only 6 games…and he is only a sophomore!)
4. A.J. Green WR Georgia (Green now has 41 receptions for 682 yards and 6 touchdowns, in just 7 games)
5. Ben Tate RB Auburn (with 132 rushing yards and a TD in a losing effort against Kentucky, Tate improved his stat line on the season to 856 yards rushing and 5 TDs, in 7 games)
