SEC Review Week Six

SouthernPigskin.com SEC Writer Jeremy Hillman reviews week six in the SEC.

Welcome to the half-way point of the 2009 SEC football season. It has been a fun ride so far, and week 6 was no different. Here is my review of the action:

SEC Coach of The Week: Nick Saban, Alabama Head Coach (the Tide looked well coached in all phases of the game, as they dismantled what was supposed to be a championship contending Ole Miss team. Alabama has moved up to #2 in the national polls with a 6-0 record.)

SEC Offensive Player Of The Week: Alshon Jeffery, WR South Carolina (the freshman receiver lit up Kentucky with 7 catches for 138 yards and 3 touchdowns)

SEC Defensive Player Of The Week: Rico McCoy, LB Tennessee (McCoy racked up 9 tackles, and a key pass deflection, in Tennessee’s rout of Georgia.)

Three UP:
1. Alabama defense (another week, another offense held in check by Alabama defenders. Ole Miss was only able to put 3 points on the scoreboard, as Alabama has yielded an average of just 10 points per SEC game this season)
2. Jonathan Crompton QB Vols (he played poorly early in the season, he was booed, he was almost benched…and then he blew up for 20 of 27 passing, 310 yards and 4 touchdowns against Georgia on Saturday. A poster child for perseverance)
3. Arkansas offense (two weeks in a row, against Texas A&M and Auburn, the Arkansas offense has rocked. In those two weeks, they have combined for over 850 offensive yards and 91 points)

Three DOWN:
1. Georgia (A 3-3 start is not what the Bulldog team or the Bulldog faithful had in mind. And they definitely didn’t expect to be blown out by a 2-3 Tennessee team. Mark Richts’ seat is getting hotter as we speak)
2. Jevan Snead (Snead is turning out to be one of the more overrated players in recent SEC memory. Once a player with preseason Heisman hype from some, he now is one of the poorest QBs in the conference…with a 96.6 QB rating good for 99th in the nation and second to last in the SEC, and just 9 TDs on a big 9 interceptions, Snead is having a dismal season so far)
3. Vanderbilt (ouch. A painful loss for Vanderbilt, and the SEC, as the Commodores fell in overtime to Army. A brutal 2-10 season looks likely.)

Top 5 Players in The SEC – Updated after Week 6:
1. Mark Ingram RB Alabama (Ingram has racked up over 800 yards of total offense this season, with a whooping 10 touchdowns in just 6 games.)
2. Tim Tebow QB Florida (even when he had a potential not to play due to a concussion, Tebow rolled to 134 yards passing, 38 yards rushing and a touchdown at LSU...giving him over 1,000 yards of offense and 11 TDs on the season)
3. A.J. Green WR Georgia (In a losing effort, Green caught 8 passes for 60 yards against the Vols. Making it 38 catches in the first 6 games and over 600 yards receiving)
4. Ryan Mallett QB Arkansas (Mallett is surging as the season progresses. He already has amazed 1422 passing yards and 13 touchdowns…both tops in the SEC)
5. Ben Tate RB Auburn (Tate is 6th in the nation and 1st in the SEC in total rushing yards, with 724. He also has an impressive 6.1 yards per carry average)
