SouthernPigskin.com SEC Writer Jeremy Hillman reviews week eight in the SEC.
The weeks are clicking by at a rapid pace, as we are already 8 weeks into the college football season. Week 8, in the SEC, brought us several thrillers and a couple blowouts. Here is my summary of the action:
SEC Coach of The Week: Houston Nutt, Ole Miss Head Coach (The Rebels soundly defeated Arkansas at home on Saturday, 30-17. The offensive game-plan for Ole Miss was balanced and effective all game long and the defense was prepared to slow down the vaunted Razorback passing game. A much needed quality win for Ole Miss, after their disappointing start to the season)
SEC Offensive Player Of The Week: Dexter McCluster, WR Ole Miss (McCluster dominated Arkansas with 123 rushing yards, 7 catches for 137 yards, and a touchdown receiving)
SEC Defensive Player Of The Week: Terrance Cody DT Alabama (Cody blocked TWO field goals in the fourth quarter, to preserve a win for Alabama, against upset-minded Tennessee)
Three UP:
1. Ole Miss offense (most of the Rebel offense was Dexter McCluster, but Javon Snead looked better than he has all season. The line was blocking well, and the running backs had a few nice runs too. This was the offensive production most everyone expected to see from the Rebels this season)
2. LSU (after blowing out Auburn, LSU has managed to keep themselves squarely in the hunt for the SEC West title…and the chance for a rematch against Florida in the SEC Championship game, if they can upset Bama in two weeks)
3. Kentucky (without much fanfare, the Wildcats are putting together a nice season. At 4-3, with 3 winnable games coming up…Miss State, at Eastern Kentucky and at Vanderbilt…an 8 win season and a large bowl game are still in the cards for UK)
Three DOWN:
1. Auburn (after an exciting 5-0 start and #17 national ranking, the Tigers have lost 3 straight and look to be struggling on both sides of the ball.)
2. Tennessee special teams (a missed field goal early in the game and two blocked field goals in the 4th quarter are very painful events in a game lost by 2 points)
3. SEC officials (an entire crew is suspended after bad calls in two major conference games, and now a replay crew is being questioned prior to the Mississippi State/Florida game. Not a good season for the SEC zebras)
Top 5 Players in The SEC – Updated after Week 6:
1. Mark Ingram RB Alabama (Ingram holds onto the top spot this week, even with his worst performance of the season in the narrow win against the Vols…lost fumble, just 99 yards rushing, no receptions and no TDs…but he still eclipsed the 1,000 yard rushing mark in just game 8 of the season and has racked up 11 TDs overall)
2. Tim Tebow QB Florida (Tebow isn’t having quite the season that some were looking for, but he has over 400 yards rushing, over 1,100 yards passing and 10 total touchdowns to lead the undefeated Gators)
3. Stephen Garcia QB South Carolina (Garcia hasn’t received much attention, but he is having a big season. After 8 weeks, he has 1,800 passing yards and 11 touchdown passes, against only 3 interceptions. He has added three rushing TDs as well)
4. A.J. Green WR Georgia (After a bye week for UGA, Green sits 41 receptions for 682 yards and 6 touchdowns, in just 7 games)
5. Randall Cobb WR Kentucky (he does it all…run, catch, pass. Cobb has tallied 280 rushing yards, 350 receiving yards, and 8 touchdowns in just 7 games. He also has several key pass completions on the season, making him a true tri-fecta threat)
