SouthernPigskin.com National Columnist Charlie K. reflects on week six in college football.
What a great weekend of college football. I watched about every game I could find via Direct TV Sports Pack and came away with the following hot six thoughts.
1. Florida went into LSU and beat them on 3 wheels. With Tim Tebow about half speed in the first half, it was obvious that for Florida to win this game against an emotional LSU Tiger team, the Gator defense was going to have to step up. Mission accomplished. This Gator team is special, I feel it. With a healthy Tim Tebow and that same Gator defense that beat LSU at Death Valley, the Gators are headed to the big dance. And I say this knowing they have a few hard games left including the SEC Championship game. But the Gators are hard to defend and that defense is low level Sunday league like.
2. I watched Colt McCoy, Tim Tebow, Sam Braford, T. Pryor, Javon Snead, Greg McElroy, Russell Wilson, Tyrod Taylor and Ryan Mallett and I have no doubt the best pro prospect I watched Saturday was Jarrett Brown of West Virginia. Against Syracuse, Brown was almost perfect completing 22-30 passes for 244 and a touchdown in three quarters of action. What separates Brown is his arm strength and ability to escape. There were five NFL scouts at Syracuse to evaluate Brown and without question his performance will elevate his position among the guys coming out for the April draft. Former WVU quarterback Pat White was taken in the second round this past April and without question Brown’s draft stock supersedes Whites pre-draft positioning. What’s so scary is that Brown is 6’4 224 and has run 4.45. All that wrapped around a major league arm spells late first round. And WVU could win 9 or 10 games before the bowl.
3. Georgia Southern had to be excited to play a BCS school like North Carolina. In fact, the Eagles were so pumped up they turned the ball over continually in the first half putting the Eagles in a huge hole. In the second half, GSU fought toe to toe with North Carolina. This tells me that GSU will be a factor going down the stretch this fall against Southern Conference foes. As I’ve said, the game at Boone, North Carolina against Appalachian State later this fall could have huge playoff implications.
4. Virginia seems to always start slow and come on to finish strong and this season it appears the trend will continue. After impressively beating Indiana out of the Big Ten, UVA totally dominated all aspect of the game and in doing so perhaps saved Virginia Head Coach Al Groh’s job. With Virginia Tech making a push to not only win the ACC but perhaps have bigger dreams in mind, the traditional VT against Virginia rivalry could be front and center at the end of the year. And the history in this game goes way back, including VT not finishing as the Hokie fans would like. November should be interesting for both Virginia and Virginia Tech.
5. Alabama plays great defense. Not good SEC defense, but down right intimidating, dominating pressure defense. With a quarterback who doesn’t give the ball away a dominate defense can take a team a long way. The Tide is gathering national support each week and some are thinking Alabama is the best team in the SEC. Well, to me they need to prove it. And frankly the way Florida is playing on defense also, those are two big time college football teams. In fact, they are the nation’s two best college football teams to this date.
6. Derek Morgan of Georgia Tech is the best pass rusher in the ACC. Morgan is a bundle of energy who happens to have long arms and a great first step. If he's not a first day draft pick I'll be stunned.

it was the early 00’s VT closed poorly, now VT loses more up front, gets better as the year goes on.
groh is still on the hot seat, but looks like the O is coming around. i for one hope he stays. he is 2 years older than frank beamer, which is a little surprising, so he can’t keep in the rebuilding mode right?
