SouthernPigskin.com Staff Writer J.T. Bennett recaps a Georgia High School matchup featuring two NC State commits.
This past Saturday night in Thomaston,GA a game between Upson-Lee Knights and the Westside-Macon Seminoles featured many ACC and SEC bound players. Westside dominated the game on the ground winning 31-7.
The obvious MVP of the game was Westside running back Robert Brown who rushed for 280 yards and two touchdowns on 34 carries. For all of our math people out there that is 8.2 yards per carry, which is pretty darn good. Brown currently has one offer from Duke but I expect that his list of offers to grow over the coming weeks. After rushing for around 1,300 yards last season Brown looks to be on track for another great season. One player simply coundn’t tackle him, it took three or four guys to bring him down.
“I would say I am a strong runner. I am a hard person to bring down.” Said Brown.
The talented Westside team also featured an Alabama commit in Ronald Carswell (WR) and an NC State commit in D.J. Green (S).
Carswell made plays on offense and special teams. He made a couple great catches and you could see a definite speed advantage as he moved downfield. Carswell is the leader on offense and is the total package. He made great down the field blocks for Brown as he is a wide receiver in run oriented offense.
D.J. Green is a monster in the secondary, the NC State commit is 6’4’’. Green used his height well to control the middle of the field. He also was a force on against the run as Upson-Lee’s offense was virtually non-existent for most of the game.
Upson-Lee’s star is athlete Logan Winkles. He is committed to NC State and looks to play fullback at the next level. Winkles currently plays tight end and defensive end for the Knights. Logan also plans to wrestle for the Wolfpack considering he is an All-American wrestler at Upson-Lee. NC State has landed a tough player whose motor never quits.
“I am excited to play in the ACC. I have been watching all of their games and I can’t wait to play in a league as good as the ACC.” Said Winkles.
Westside-Macon is the real deal and will be force in the playoffs, in three games the Seminoles have outscored their opponents 119-7.
