Four schools from the ACC and SEC are currently standing out to top 2016 prospect Dedrick Mills.

High school football fans in Georgia’s coastal region knew that Ware County RB/LB Dedrick Mills was going to be a high-profile college prospect before he had even finished up his freshman season in Waycross.

Playing in Georgia’s second-highest classification (AAAAA), Mills led the Gators in tackles as a freshman, helping the team make it all the way to the State Championship Game at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

He continued to run of dominance on the defensive side of the football as a sophomore, but also became the featured running back in Ware’s vaunted ground-based attack. The additional role did not slow him down either, as he finished the season as one of the top rushers in the Peach State.

Though he is still two years away from signing with a college program, Mills already has a handful of elite scholarship offers from which to choose. As he focuses his attention on summer camp, Mills currently holds offers from Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Kentucky, Marshall, South Carolina and Tennessee.

The toughest decision for Mills over the next couple of years might not be where he wants to play his college football, but rather which position he is going to play. Having already displayed the talent to excel at either position at the next level, Mills will likely get to decide which side of the football he calls home in college.

“I love to hit,” Mills commented on the Southern Pigskin Radio Network. “I love the excitement you get out of it. But I also like running the ball too, so it’s a tough decision for me. Going to college, I guess I would rather run the ball.”

But what are college programs telling him is his best position for the future?

“Most of them prefer me to play running back,” Mill continued. “An Auburn coach asked me one day what I position I thought I would be playing in college and I told him linebacker. He said, ‘You are a running back’.”

Mills will continue to serve as a two-way star for Ware County as the Gators welcome in established high school coach Franklin Stephens from Lamar County. The hope is that the combination of one of the top players nationally in the class of 2016 and one of the top high school coaches in the state of Georgia will ultimately lead to the Gators bringing home a state championship this fall.

In the meantime, Mills will continue to focus on improving himself on the football field, while also taking some time to give thought to the recruiting process.

Although there is still plenty of time remaining before he will have to make a decision, Mills does have four schools currently standing out to him.

“Right now, I would say my top schools are Auburn, Florida State, South Carolina and Tennessee, in no particular order,” said Mills.

Folks in South Georgia will undoubtedly be following Mills’ recruitment intently as it continues to heat up over the next year.

Just be sure that you don’t spend so much time focusing on his recruitment that you lose focus on what he is accomplishing on the gridiron. Otherwise, you might miss out on one of the best prospects that South Georgia has ever produced.
