Shawn Smith decided on Virginia just over a week before National Signing Day.
Dynamic Peach State athlete Shawn Smith from Brunswick High School joined the Virginia Cavaliers on Wednesday over offers from a number of ACC and SEC programs. Having played quarterback, running back and wide receiver for the Pirates, Smith is set to play slot receiver in Charlottesville. He has also expressed an eagerness to contribute on special teams.
Last April, Smith pledged to South Carolina before decommitting in early October. He decided on Virginia just over a week before National Signing Day.
"It is a great campus, the coaching staff is very good and they kept interest in me throughout the whole recruiting process. When other schools doubted me and left me alone, they still pushed for me and that really stuck out," Smith explained.
A consistent message conveyed by head coach Bronco Mendenhall, entering his second season with the Cavaliers, resonated with Smith. The star playmaker is ready to head north with a poignant perspective.
"Coach Mendenhall, he is a powerful man. All he preaches is that its not given, you have to earn it," Smith continued. "That really stuck out to me, because you cant just get everything, you have to earn what you really want. So that plays a big part into it, too."
Smith is one of three Georgia-natives to sign with Virginia.
