Mind Your Words: Part II

A few thoughts for college football fans who utilize social media following the recent tragedy at Auburn.

I start this article as a continuation of where I left off last week: Mind your words.

Every year deeper into the millennium we go, it gets increasingly scary how just a few words can make the biggest impact. What makes these situations even more difficult is that many of these words are being said from behind a computer screen, or not at all. With the beauty of Facebook, users no longer have to “say” anything at all. Simple actions are posted for all to see.

Auburn’s shooting may or may not have started over a girl and may or may not have been initiated through Facebook actions. What we do know is that the phrase “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all” has never been more true.

It is beyond sad to watch high school and college students fight over little things posted on the internet. What happened at Auburn is not okay, however, it is not the first (or the last) fight that has started because of a girl or things that are rumored to be true.

Social media can be so great when used in the appropriate ways. However, when used to cause a vendetta towards someone, social media starts to look a whole lot less necessary than many people think it is.

It would be great to think that young people will start to learn their lessons of right and wrong with social media. Unfortunately, we know this is probably not true. Students do not always realize the power of social media, rumors, and a few words.

As this first full week without part of the Auburn family comes to a close, it seems impractical to justify what happened and impossible for their loved ones to forget. The Auburn Tigers will have even more reason to play with passion and intensity this year.

Mind your words, especially on the internet. In a world where you no longer have to be brave enough to verbalize your thoughts to someone’s face, life can get a little scary. Express all of your positive thoughts in excess and your negative ones with scarcity. Express your love daily and remember those who are gone. Today, we are all Tigers. War Eagle.
