Even per Crimson Tide standards, this defense is standing out.

Defense wins championships -- and Alabama's, in the category that matters most, simply continues to dominate. Nine games into the 2017 season, the Crimson Tide are allowing just 9.8 points per game, a total that would finish as college football's lowest since Dont'a Hightower roamed the Capstone in 2011. Alabama's defense has given up just nine touchdowns this fall, including only two in the first half.

Even per Crimson Tide standards, this defense is standing out.

Though Washington leads the nation in total defense, Alabama, aside from this year's Huskies, is giving up the fewest yards per game since its famed 2011 squad. The Crimson Tide have allowed merely three rushing scores, tied for the best in the country, and are holding opposing quarterbacks to the lowest rating in the game and the program's lowest rate since 2011 at 97.81.

This unit is performing as one of Nick Saban's best. Currently, Alabama leads the SEC in scoring defense, total defense, rush defense, pass defense rating, third down defense, redzone defense, turnovers forced, passes defended and has surrendered the fewest plays of 20 yards or more league-wide. A testament to how well the defense plays together as a group, the Crimson Tide do not have a single player in the top 30 in the conference in total tackles.

Six SEC offenses have combined to score just 41 points against the Crimson Tide, with Arkansas, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Vanderbilt combining for a grand total of 12. The Volunteers and Commodores recently amassed less than 200 offensive yards together. No opponent has scored more than ten points on Alabama in over a month. Up to now, the end result has been the Crimson Tide outscoring foes by a combined score of 368-88.

Even with a mounting number of injuries, Alabama's 2017 defense stands up with any of college football's premier units from over the past decade. For the Crimson Tide, such dominance is more than a program tradition, it's also a proven formula for a championship.
