It wasn't pretty, but it didn't have to be; the end result is one that the Tigers desperately needed.

What a difference a week can make. One Saturday after losing at home to Troy, LSU moved to 4-2 on the season with a gritty 17-16 victory over Florida in Gainesville. The Tigers avenged last year's dramatic defeat to salvage some momentum as the season reaches the mid-way point. LSU, right after its first non-conference home loss since 2000, now has some traction ahead of a huge home game with undefeated Auburn.

It wasn't pretty, but it didn't have to be; the end result is one that the Tigers desperately needed.

As has often been the case for LSU, defense led the way. Clinging to a one-point lead late, the Tigers held the Gators to just 24 total yards on their last three offensive possessions. Though the unit allowed two third-quarter touchdowns, LSU's fourth-quarter defense, after an Eddie Pineiro missed extra-point, proved to be the difference. Additionally, a great punt by Zach Von Rosenberg pinned Florida near its own goaline on the Gators' final drive.

Offensive production was scarce for most of the second half, but LSU followed a proven path to victory: the Tigers ran the football well, did not turn it over and made multiple big plays defensively. LSU also had just five penalties.

Even in a disappointing season, one win, even if just by one point, can change things. The Tigers, with another triumph next weekend, could reposition themselves nationally and turn the page from their frustrating September struggles.
