Western Carolina used the arm and legs of their Sophomore Quarterback to pull off a huge upset on Family Weekend in Cullowhee. Tyrie Adams passed for 312 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 152 yards and a touchdown leading Western Carolina to a come from behind win over 17th ranked Samford 38-34. The win was the Catamounts first win over an FCS ranked opponent in 27 tries, dating back to the 2006 season.

Samford Quarterback Devlin Hodges put on quite a show for the Bulldogs including a 36-yard touchdown pass to Kelvin McKnight that put Samford ahead 34-31 with 3:22 remaining in the game.  Hodges finished the day 38 of 66 for 516 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Detrez Newsome capped a 75-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown run that put the Catamounts up 38-34 with 1:33 left. Newsome, the leading rusher in the SoCon coming into the game, ran for 96 yards on 25 carries with two touchdowns both coming in the 4th quarter.

Samford was led by Kelvin McKnight and Chris Shelling who both finished the game with 12 catches on the day.  Shelling churned out 245 yards and a touchdown with his 12 receptions and McKnight gained 194 yards and 3 touchdowns with his 12 catches.

It doesn’t get any easier for Samford (2-2, 0-1) next week as they host two-time defending SoCon Champion The Citadel while Western Carolina (3-1, 1-0) heads west to take on Chattanooga.
