nSPARTANBURG, S.C. xe2x80x93 The Southern Conference has been informed that the NCAA has granted The Citadelxe2x80x99s waiver request to play a 12th regular-season football game this academic year. The Bulldogs will now be able to compete in a full eight-game SoCon slate in the spring and will be eligible for the leaguexe2x80x99s championship and automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Football Championship.

nxe2x80x9cThis new development will allow for all of our teams to play a complete eight-game conference football schedule this spring, and that is good for The Citadel and SoCon football,xe2x80x9d Southern Conference Commissioner Jim Schaus said. xe2x80x9cWe are in the process of reviewing the conference schedule to determine if changes will need to be made and would expect that to be finalized shortly.xe2x80x9d

nThe SoCon announced its spring football schedule last week, but because The Citadel played four fall contests, a full eight-game slate in the spring would have exceeded the NCAAxe2x80x99s 11-game regular-season maximum without a waiver. Furman was randomly selected as the opponent The Citadel would not have faced, but with the waiver granted, the Paladins and Bulldogs will now meet this spring.
