Playing without the services of Jerick McKinnon, Dominique Swope and Ezayi Youyoute, amongst others, the Georgia Southern offense struggled to get much going most of the afternoon.

As a movie crew for the upcoming release “Erk”, a movie detailing the life and career of legendary Georgia Southern head coach Erk Russell, set up shop to film scenes for the big screen, the Eagles’ current collection of players attempted to put on a show of their own as Georgia Southern hosted its annual Blue & White Game inside historic Paulson Stadium.

Playing in front of an enthusiastic crowd, the Blue team (defense) was able to outlast the White team (offense) 14-12 in a physical contest.

The Eagles used a modified scoring system for their spring game, resulting in the unusual score.

Playing without the services of Jerick McKinnon, Dominique Swope and Ezayi Youyoute, amongst others, the Eagles’ offense struggled to get much going most of the afternoon.

The White team was able to drive deep into Blue team territory on several occasions, but a series of turnovers and a key fourth down stop allowed the Blue Team to hold on for the victory.

Rising senior running back William Banks scored the lone touchdown of the afternoon, scoring from five yards out with 6:31 left in the game. He took the subsequent two-point conversion attempt to paydirt as well, tying the contest at 12-12.

With the game still tied late in the contest, Georgia Southern’s coaching staff made the decision to go for it on fourth down on the game’s final play. The White team was stopped short of the marker, giving the Blue team two points for the turnover on downs and the 14-12 victory.

“I wasn’t as satisfied as I hoped I’d be with the spring game today,” head coach Jeff Monken commented following the contest. “As I told our kids, I’m glad we have a couple of more days to practice to get some of the mistakes cleaned up.”

Prior to the opening kickoff, members of the 2012 team, including star defensive backs J.J. Wilcox and Darius Eubanks, received their rings for being crowned as SoCon co-champions last season.

Many former Eagles stars were also in attendance on the sidelines. The notable faces included former All-American running back Jermaine Austin and former quarterback Jaybo Shaw.

The Eagles have two practices remaining before the official end of the spring session.
