ETSU Holds On to Upset Mocs

Quay Holmes led East Tennessee State to an upset win over #20 Chattanooga 17-14 in Johnson City giving the Bucs sole possession of first place in the SOCON.

Quay Holmes led East Tennessee State to an upset win over #20 Chattanooga 17-14 in Johnson City giving the Bucs sole possession of first place in the SOCON.

Holmes scored on a 54-yard touchdown reception and followed it up with a 4-yard touchdown run to give ETSU an early 14-0 lead. A 33-yard JJ Jerman field goal was added before halftime to make it 17-0 at the break. 

Chattanooga got going in the fourth quarter with a Nick Tiano to Bryce Nunnelly touchdown pass from 3-yards out to cut the Bucs lead to 17-7. Tyrell Price brought the Mocs within 17-14 with 4:27 left in the game with a 3-yard touchdown run. Chattanooga had one last chance to tie or take the lead, but their last drive ended at midfield with a fumble as time expired. 

Chattanooga was led by Nick Tiano’s 272 yards passing on 32 completions, the Bucs were led by Austin Herink’s 171 yards in the air with a touchdown.

ETSU moves to 3-0 in SOCON play which is a half game ahead of 2-0 Wofford.

Chattanooga will look to bounce back next week when they host Wofford, ETSU will remain at home to play Gardner-Webb. The Bucs will be the third SOCON team that Gardner-Webb has faced this season.
