Behind a huge day from Quarterback Devlin Hodges the Bulldogs defeated a top 5 opponent for the first time since 1992.

It is hard to call the 5th ranked team in the country a “Cinderella Team” but in a way the Wofford Terriers in 2017 have been living a Cinderella type season. Coming into the game with Samford on Saturday, Wofford had won 5 games by a total of 16 points. The 16th ranked Bulldogs from Birmingham grabbed the glass slipper from the Terriers and smashed it in a back and forth 24-21 win in Spartanburg.

Behind a huge day from Quarterback Devlin Hodges the Bulldogs defeated a top 5 opponent for the first time since a 1992 win over 3rd ranked Eastern Kentucky. Hodges threw for 427 yards on 37 of 54 passes with three touchdowns. Two of Hodges receivers hauled in 11 catches each with a touchdown a piece as well. Kelvin McKnight caught Hodges first touchdown pass of the day, a 9 yard pass with thirty-eight seconds remaining before halftime to tie the game at 7.

Chris Shelling caught Hodges third touchdown pass of the day, a 23 yard pass, to give the Bulldogs a 21-14 lead mid-way through the 4th quarter. Jordan Weaver kicked a 27 yard field goal with 1:28 in the game to give Samford the 24-21 lead and take Wofford’s glass slipper momentarily. The Bulldogs smashed the glass slipper with 6 seconds left in the game when Omari Williams intercepted a Joe Newman pass in the endzone to seal the win.

With the win Samford moves to 5-2 overall and is tied atop the SoCon at 3-1 with Wofford, Furman and Western Carolina. The Bulldogs host struggling Chattanooga next week and Wofford heads to Johnson City to take on ETSU.
