Samford and The Citadel share the Bulldog as their mascot but that is where the similarities end.

Samford and The Citadel share the Bulldog as their mascot but that is where the similarities end.

The Bulldogs from Charleston lead FCS with 380 yards rushing per game. The Bulldogs from Birmingham are 6th in FCS with 328.5 passing yards per game. The Citadel ranks first in the SoCon in total defense giving up just 237 yards per game. Samford is last in the league giving up 532 yards per game.

The Citadel is producing on offense by spreading the ball around with five players averaging 50 yards or more on the ground. Grant Drakeford (80.7 ypg), Cam Jackson (74.3 ypg), Dominique Allen (66.7 ypg), Brandon Rainey (58.7 ypg) and Jordan Black (52 ypg) all rank in the top 10 among SoCon rushers.

SoCon Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Quarterback Devlin Hodges is the engine that makes the Samford car go. Hodges, fresh off a 516 yard and 4 touchdown performance last week in a 38-34 loss to Western Carolina, is leading the league with 325.2 yards per game while completing 64% of his passes.  The Samford signal caller has taken care of the ball as well only throwing 2 interceptions while notching 13 touchdowns through the air. Hodges, also is responsible for Samford’s only two rushing touchdowns through 4 games.

In last year’s matchup of the SoCon’s Bulldogs, The Citadel snatched a 37-34 overtime win in Charleston to clinch the SoCon Title and automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs. Citadel Fullback Tyler Renew led the way for the Bulldogs in blue with 285 yards on the ground to go along with 3 touchdowns. Samford was led by Hodges with 280 yards in the air with two touchdown passes.

The Bulldogs will meet for the 11th time Saturday in Birmingham with the Citadel holding a slim 6-4 lead in the series.
