Samford's 38-27 win on the road over East Tennessee State created a three-way tie atop the SOCON Standings.

Samford Head Coach Chris Hatcher may be getting a few thank you notes in the mail this week. The Bulldogs 38-27 win on the road over East Tennessee State created a three-way tie atop the SOCON Standings.  Wofford, Furman and East Tennessee State all claim a share of the 2018 Title with Wofford claiming the leagues automatic bid to the NCAA FCS Playoffs that begin next week.

Wofford, finished their SOCON schedule last week, beat Presbyterian College at home Saturday 45-21 will be the automatic qualifier from the SOCON in the NCAA FCS Playoffs by virtue of points allowed tie-breaker.  Furman gained their share of the programs 14th SOCON Title by defeating Mercer 35-30 on Saturday but the Paladins needed to only give up 16 points to the Bears in order to gain the automatic bid to the playoffs.

Furman will now wait firmly on the bubble for the Selection Committee’s selection Sunday afternoon on ESPN News at 12:30. East Tennessee State was the only team controlling their own destiny heading into Saturday to clinch their first outright SOCON Title. The Bucs came up short losing to Samford, but the Bucs should hear their name called on Sunday afternoon as an at-large participant in the playoffs.

The points allowed tie-breaker came into play due to the three teams tied at 6-2 all beat one another, and all lost to 4th place Samford which was the next tie-breaker after head to head meetings.

Wofford will be making their 3rd consecutive playoff appearance, Furman will hope to be making back to back playoff appearances for the first time since 2005 and 2006, and East Tennessee State will be looking to make their second ever playoff appearance with the other coming in 1996.
