Here's everything you need to know to get ready for week five in the SoCon.

Six SOCON teams garnered votes in this weeks STATS FCS Top 25 Poll. Wofford moved up one spot to #7 despite having an off week and Chattanooga returned to the poll for the first time since 2016 after their upset of then #17 Samford, coming in at #20. Samford, East Tennessee State, Mercer and Western Carolina all received votes.

A pair of SOCON quarterbacks set new school records for passing yards last week. Mercer’s Robert Riddle threw for 347 yards in the Bears 38-31 loss to The Citadel and VMI’s Reece Udinski notched 491 yards in the air in the Keydets 52-50 loss at Western Carolina.

First place in the SOCON is not the only prize on the line this week when Chattanooga travels across the Smoky Mountains to Johnson City to take on East Tennessee State. The “Rail Rivalry “will commence for the first time as both teams will be vying for a new railroad inspired trophy. Due to both universities and cities share a proud railroad industry history, the new rail trophy will be a symbol of that heritage. The Rail, made from a former railroad tie that at one time connected Johnson City to Chattanooga, weighs 108 pounds which represents the halfway point of the 216 miles that separate the two cities. The trophy is five feet, seven inches long, which represents the 57 years since the teams first meeting in 1961.

Western Carolina is in search of a 4-0 start to the season for the first time since 1969. The Catamounts won nine games in a row that season before falling to Presbyterian College in the last game of the season to finish 9-1. The Catamounts are looking to begin SOCON play 2-0 for the second year in a row as well as snap a two-game losing streak to Furman.
