What you need to know ahead of week nine in the SoCon.

Mercer Quarterback Kaelan Riley and Furman Linebacker Reynard Ellis has been named to the Jerry Rice Award “Watch List” this week by STATS, LLC.  Riley has completed close to 64 percent of his passes for 1,726 yards and 13 touchdowns through the Bears first 8 games.  Ellis is the Paladins second leading tackler with 47, including 2 for loss and 1 sack. The Jerry Rice Award is awarded annually to the most outstanding freshman player in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) of college football as chosen by a nationwide panel of media and college sports information directors. 

Samford moved into the Top Ten this week at #9 in the STATS, LLC FCS Top 25 Poll after their win at Wofford.  Wofford remained in the Top Ten at #8, Western Carolina is the third SoCon team ranked at #18.  Furman and The Citadel received votes in the latest Top 25 Poll.  Over the course of the season eight of the nine teams in the league have either been ranked or received votes in the poll. 

The Military Classic of the South will be played for the 73rd time this weekend in Charleston.  The Citadel holds a 40-30-2 against VMI in the “Battle for the Silver Shako”.  The Citadel has won ten straight in the series with the Keydets.
